I have a friend who is right handed and left eye dominate. He is having some difficulty shooting. Anyone else have the same problem? Is there a fix? How do you compensate for it?

poke out his left eye. j/k of course.

my bestfriends daughter had the same problem. he had her wear a patch of pair of sunglasses with the left eye taped over to block the left eyes veiw. over time and practice she doesent need the patch anymore.

hope this helps

I'm a right handed left eye dominant shooter, I've bever had a problem? What's the problem, shooting left or right of the target?

I am right handed left eye dominant. Is the problem with Rifles or Handguns? What is the problem. I shoot pistols in my right hand and both eyes open, no problem. I shoot rifles left handed because it feels better that way.

I'm the same way, right handed, but left eye dominant.

There are a number of ways, back when I first started shooting and hunting I used to take my contact out of my dominant eye when I was shooting shot guns with both eyes open. That was a hassle especially when we'd be in the marsh and I say "oh, hold on a minute guys let me take my contact out."

As time progressed I got smarted and wore shooting glasses with a piece of scotch tape over the dominant eye. There was just enough tape to cover obscure the central vision of my dominant eye, doing so leaves the peripherial vision and depth perception unaltered and lets you rely on your "weak" eye. I suppose you could walk around for days on end with a piece of tape over your glasses to "strengthen" you non-dominant eye, but you'd look pretty silly.

As time progressed I finally wised up and just started shooting left handed. It seemed more natural and I think that I actually shot better. This has seemed to work well for both shotguns and rifles, but I will admit that I have a problem aligning the sites with handguns. In that case I'd probably pull the tape on the shooting glasses trick.

Hope this helps.

who is the boss.

The eye is the boss. If you are left eye dominant you need to shoot left handed. Also, my wife who is right eye dominant and left handed, greatly improved her shooting by adapting to the right hand. Then we enhanced her rifle shooting capapbility even more by puttting an eotech on her rifle.

You do NOT need to change which hand you shoot with.

My wife is right-handed, left eye dominant and she shoots quite well. You should be shooting with both eyes open anyway and whether your left or right eye is dominant, won't make a difference.

Some people may be able to switch their shooting hands, but this is often more difficult than just keeping both eyes open.

Shooting on the dominate eye side is more natural and most helpful shooting shotguns. Trainers recommend learning to shoot on the same side as the dominate eye because your opposite hand will point at what you look at by instinct. I have seen pretty good shooters cross dominate but it's it's not recommended or usually as consistent as you are fighting nature.

I am right handed and slightly left eye dominate. Shooting pistol, I just line up the sights to my left eye, qualified Expert in the military. When I shoot rifle, I have to close my left eye and use only my right eye. Qualified Expert on the M-4.

/raise hand
I shoot lefty to solve the problem. It was awkward at first, but worth the effort. Now it feels weird to shoot righty.

Both eyes open for pistol, left eye takes over. Squint left eye for shotgun, close left eye for scope work

I'm left handed and right eye dominant. Been through Law enforcement academy and was in the top of the class in firearms. I've hunted all sorts of animals since an early age with success for over 30 years (I am now 42). I went through the academy and the very 1st day the instructors did the eye test to determine how we should each shoot. I lied and told them I was left eye dominant. I did this for two reasons. I don't feel comfortable carrying, shooting with my off (right hand) and I damned sure don't feel comfortable handling (ie, speed loading, etc,...) off handed. I lied because I had a friend that told me what the instructors were gonna do on day one.

The jest of what I'm saying is a person may have a strong hand and a strong eye that don't match up (right/left). I feel very uncomfortable using my right hand for firearm shooting purposes. I suppose a bunch of right handers would feel the same about carrying and shooting with their left hand..... Any comments?????

I have an even worse problem -- I'm right handed and right eye dominant, but as I got older, I became far-sighted in the right eye, so I couldn't see the sights very well. And I got near-sighted in the left eye.

I re-trained myself, starting with the right eye closed and tilting the head to the right, using the left eye to see the sights. Once I got used to that, I started shooting with both eyes open, always slightly tilting the head.

Now I see the sights needle-sharp, and the target seen with the right eye is also in focus -- the brain merges the two images nicely.

Same cross dominant problem here. 69 years old and competitive shooter for a loooooongg time.

I shoot long guns left handed and handguns right handed. If the shooter knows how to make the sights clear and targets fuzzy (handgun rapid fire) then the right hand will work. No matter the hand the eyes and head will adjust to make it work.
The worst I see is a youngster trying to shoot a rifle right handed and no one knows he is left eye dominant. More difficult to pick up if the kid is shooting a handgun. He/she will adapt. They always close the weak eye and move the head a little. Start that kid lefthanded with the long gun. There is no reason to fight nature.

I have thought about this point. I realized that for tactical purposes, in a self defense situation it frees up my dominant arm for other things.. punching? :p
ETA: I am right handed, left eye dominant, and I shoot lefty.

I am right handed and left eye dominant.

I tend to use my left eye for pistols and my right for rifles... No real issues with either...

I'm left handed and right eye dominant.

Same here, but, I shoot right handed mostly.

Ever hear of Karoly Takcaz? It's a pretty impressive story. I think about that story when I shoot off handed.

I'm not comfortable carrying left handed.

I am right handed left eye dominant as well.

I shoot handguns right handed and shoot cross eyed.

I shoot long guns lefty so I can utilize my good eye.

It took me a long time to get left handed shoulder shooting down. I still find myself bringing the rifle up right handed sometimes. I practiced with my bow this way too and my shooting has improved on both fronts.

I'm right handed/left eye dominant and I shoot left-handed. My holsters are left handed, I have left-handed long guns, etc.

The only disadvantage I could see would be if I lived in the Wild West and had to defend my life in a quick draw gun fight.

Otherwise, it's all good.
