My savage mark 2 american classic has been sitting unused since last fall after I stole its scope to put on something else. This finally got me motivated to put something else on it and sight it in shooting offhand out the patio door today. The wind is blowing like 20 mph right now but once it calms down I will try it. Probably do it twice, once with cci standards and once with some eley that I bought a while ago. Its no bechrest gun but pretty good for a sporter.

The wind calmed down this evening so I took the chance to get out and shoot. The savage was a bust. I was shooting some really nice nickel sized groups to warm up and zero the new scope and then it started throwing shots vertically. I gave up on it and decided to put the old scope back on and try again tomorrow. Sure enough when I went to take the scope off I found I had forgot to tighten the scope rings to the bases and the back one was about to fall off!

Anyway just to get scores for something different I brought two other 22's for fun. To get an iron sights score on the board I got out my Marlin model 60 with Williams peep sights. I had a really hard time seeing the brass front sight bead against that white backround but I did much better than I expected I would. Right target was first with some old winchester subsonic I've been shooting in it and left target was CCI standard. Really tough to see those little targets with peeps, at least for me anyway. Scores were 67 and 79

Next I know this is a rifle forum but I had to get a pistol in there so I put the scope on my buckmark. Scope is a 2x leupold. The crosshairs completely cover the visible part of the target so its tought to get a bead. I should have adjusted the scope for a lower right hold or something. Ammo was cci standard. Score was 89

From a previous post regarding iron sights

I don't think I can see these at 50yds without a scope!

I had that same thought as I considered iron sighted rifle choices. Win 75, Rem 521T, CZ99, Kim 82G ...

What I would say can be allowed is take a target, blacken the outer scoring rings and place it over the scoring target. Shoot through the modified target into the scoring one. Make sense ?
If I remember right I need at least a 3" black bull for 50yd irons.

While a competition, we still need to have fun !

Someguy2800, glad to see you got out and shot ! Any outing is a good outing and shooting for score can be humbling.
Just for grins I'll probably try an offhand target if I get time.

I had considered stacking two targets on top of one another and sticking a big orange stickers on the top one just so I could see them with the iron sights and the pistol scope but I wanted to stay fair. Mabey I'll try that tomorrow if you don't have a problem with that.

Or go ahead and keep opens in this thread for score tally, and @ford8nr could use post #2 to outline the open/iron? sight rules, if any different than scoped and post the target for download there?

Lets leave what we have run as is for now.

We'll see how this goes and may be see if we can change things up for another one in the future.
( Colt the A23 does look like a good option )

That was fun!
It was raining most of the day. My printer ink is not water resistant, so I applied a layer of packing tape to the target, as I placed it on some cardboard. This made them difficult to score without placing a bullet into the target board. But they did stay run-free.

I discovered a parallax(or something) issue with the scope I put on last fall. My first and worst scope purchase. Thanks, Cheaper than skite and Konus, not only did I over pay, I over paid for junk. It seemed the match target was the best of the day.
I would like to trade out for my Crossfire II and try again. If I have time after installing some windows for my auntie.

Now for photos, I actually remembered to take some!

I didn't ask, but assumed from @Skylerbone's post to use three shots per target. After a bore snake and ten sighters,(why is this shooting so high now?) I shot the match and then proceeded to become frustrated with the scope. I am quite happy with the score. I would like to throw the Konus in the swamp. I would like to shoot something like this again, perhaps it is even more fun with other Humans.

With my Savage Mark II I shot a score of One hundred two, using Aguila Rifle Match. I am quite happy with that.

Many Thanks to you, @ford8nr for getting me off my duff and trying something new!

I'm hoping to get out Tuesday 5/22 to shoot a target or two. Might be a good day for it. I'm more interested in group size than score, but we'll see what happens. My 581 will probably be the best shooter in my stable.

That target is smaller than it looks once you print it lol. Hoping I can keep them in the 9 ring.

Yes it is. I was thinking of using iron sights before I printed that target. My 53 year old eyes might have a say in that matter. :D

Here's what the modified overlay target would look like. I may be able to scan it and add it to the original post.

( The overlay has no outer scoring rings after blackening )

Thanks for that allowance for iron sights, ford8nr. :)

Shooting small groups is one thing, shooting the 10-ring on a target is a whole other thing entirely. You need consistent ammo and an actual 50-yard zero that shoots to the center. You’re also shooting out your aiming point if you shoot without an overlay or adjust your scope to 4 other aiming points, trusting it will track perfectly.

I mentioned doing a quick 25-yard zero on my 10/22 the same day. For that I brought Federal AutoMatch (cheap, bulk) and what I thought was a full box (turned out to be 11 rounds) of Aguila standard velocity. Discounting the shortcomings of the rifle and my ~1 shot per second rush to meet time constraints, the difference in ammo consistency is apparent and this is just comparing bulk with an incremental quality increase. Actual Match ammo in a tighter chamber makes these look like they came from a .410

AutoMatch. Discounting the big flyer, there’s still nothing like a true “center” it shoots to.

Aguila Standard Velocity. With a slower rate of fire, I could probably realize a group 2/3 this size. For my purposes however, I simply moved 2 clicks left for now which means dead squirrel to 30 yards.

To show scale. Each line of the target is also 1/4”

I'm going to have to wait a bit before I can join in. My club only has a fifty foot indoor range, and the other one close to me costs way too much for that. Perhaps next weekend I can get out to my neighbor's place so I can do it under real world conditions.

I will try to get a set of targets printed and get some time.
Next weekend looks possible. I have many different targets, but my printer died.

This looks like fun. I struggled to print a target. (tech issues with hp printer/tablet/service provider/webroot/me ).

25ft is n/a where I shoot. I will do 9 yards.

Have fun

Savage BSEV restocked into Boyd's Pro-Varmint
Bushnell Elite Tactical LRHS 4.5-18x44mm G2H reticle (set on 15)
Nightforce 20MOA rail & standard rings
Winchester (Harris knock off) bipod front (regret forgetting my Harris).
Armageddon Gear OG Game Changer rear
Eley Club - MV unknown in this rifle

Fired round robin as 4 shot strings with 1 shot at each target, mags loaded with 4 rounds, repeated 3x per page. Don't have a magnifying plug, used a loaded round for scoring (only one hole looks questionable - very clear crescent cut when full dia bullet is inserted).

Best out of 4 attempts. Dropped 2 for 118. Other scores were two 116's and a 112.

Indeed a good target size for the range. I've been playing steel games and action shooting predominantly the last 6yrs or so, haven't been shooting any paper matches in recent years other than a few Service Rifle matches (where you can't see the impacts until the spotter is plugged), and it VERY QUICKLY reminded me of the absolute heartbreak when you watch yourself drop points in the scope. Lighting in my indoor is terrible, so I couldn't pick out the hits in the black, but it was very obvious when there wasn't a new impact carved out of the white 10 ring. I'm going to revisit next weekend with one of my 10/22's, a Mark III, and a 17HMR Taurus Tracker to see how they fair. I expect if I hung 20 of these, I'd get a 120 eventually with this Savage, but also probably a handful south of 110 too. Only had 30min at the range today, so I had to zero and run my strings.

The fun part for me about 50yrd matches with well sized targets is leaving the range and wondering really hard whether your centerfire rifles would do any better in the same game. Even though they're only 3 round groups, 3 of those are .33-.36" (.63-.68moa), and I'm typically only a .4-.6MOA shooter on my best days, especially with the poor light at our indoor.
