Officer Gary Skerski was the community relations officer for the 15th district here in Philadelphia. He was responding to a robbery call at a bar three blocks from my house. He was killed by a blast to the throat from a short barreled shotgun. Investigators say he never had time to draw his sidearm.

I knew Officer Skerski because he attended our civic association meetings. He didn't do street work normally because of his job as community relations officer. Hence, he normally didn't wear a full duty belt. He wore his .357 in a belt holster with an extreme (at least 45 degrees) cant forward. After meeting him for the first time, I remember wondering how anyone could ever draw from such an awkward angle.
He will be truly missed in our neighborhood.
