Well, I finally got around to tapping the old rivet and extractor out, but now I've discovered the new rivet is slightly smaller than the hole. I was cautious and didn't bore it out during removal either, the old rivet was actually quite loose to begin with.

So I'm thinking I can close the hole a few thousandths by taping the edge of the bolt down a smidge. From what I can tell, it shouldn't cause any problems doing so.

I need to have this 7 mag up and running soon and don't really want to go on the search for a larger rivet, or spend money to have someone braze in the hole and then re-tap the hole. Plus I would like to avoid getting the bolt hot, or over heated by someone who might not have a good handle on heat transfer in this respect.

But I was also thinking I could maybe fill the hole with liquid weld and then tap the hole as needed, would that hold if I flare the exterior of the rivet after insertion? Or, I thought about flattening the rivet slightly, so it will drive in tight and the finish it with a flare on the outer side.

What say you? Give me some ideas please. I'm pretty smith orientated, and also good with these type tasks if given some direction. I know I'm way over concerned about this, it's only a rivet, and there is really very little risk here, especially considering the original one was loose to begin with for probably 1000 rounds and it never fell out.

The holes are always a little larger. Put the rivet in from the inside of the bolt so the end of the rivet sticks out.

Use a small ballpeen hammer. Use the round end and slowly tap it till it flatens out. You will need to have something on the inside of the bolt to hold the rivet in place.

Once you get it completely flat. You might have to use a dremel tool or small file to smooth it up.

Its a fairly easy job to do and shouldnt take more than 15 to 20 mins.

Good luck.

You don't have a problem.

Rivet = Means it gets bigger to fit the hole when you rivet it.

Thanks all, I've just never done a riveted extractor on a bolt gun, so I wasn't sure if expanding the exterior with a ballpeen hammer of the rivet would flatten it out or expand it enough to keep it in place. And since I only bought one rivet, I didn't want to destroy it, thus having to wait for another to ship. But I think I've got the idea now, thanks again!

I wish I understood why Rem even used this design instead of the plug and play type in my other 700's? Seems like a stupid design to me?

Thanks RC, I did just that and made a tool to hold the rivet head securely against the extractor and then peened it. Came out great, in fact, it came out looking exactly like the factory job with an undetectable surface on the exterior after peening it. Then a little bit of dremel work finished off the inside real clean.

But I can now see why one would have difficulty without the bolt face tool, not that it's all that difficult to make something that will suffice, but still.

Thanks again!
