Wondering if anyone knows a good place to pick up a model 700 extractor rivet type for magnum long action? Mine is starting to act like it might want to play opossum. Was sizing some brass and chamber checking a piece. Closed the bolt and felt a little catch. Is it likely that it just bent a little and I can pry it back up so it engages the rim smoothly again or?

Saw they carry a replacement but it was not available. Was not able to find anything else though. Considered upgrade options but really don’t want to have machine work done to my blue printed action

I see what you mean -- Numrich and Midwest are also OOS, and Midway doesn't seem to stock them. Gunbroker or eBay maybe, or the WTB section on THR?

Anyone know of a gunsmith that specializes in M700 work? The riveted extractor is the M700 part I personally like the least (I've seen two broken ones); someplace that works on them regularly might have some stock on hand.

Yeah I’m not really sure. I’m going to call the builder tomorrow and see if they have one. May have to mail my bolt to them

I would send it to a competent gunsmith and have them install a Sako style extractor, or buy a .700 bolt from PT&G that already has the Sako extractor cuts/holes in the bolt nose. I've done this to three Remington 700s and never looked back.

Well I thought about that but I would have to either get my current bolt machined for a different extractor or have the new bolt blueprinted to my receiver. I’ve never had issues with a factory extractor on a model 700 and hate to spend hundreds for a 50 dollar fix. It’s definitely on my mind though. What’s it cost roughly to have the Sako style machined into my bolt?

I've had a couple of those done, I don't see it as a worthwhile conversion, as I've never had a problem with the stock Remington extractor.

The stock Rem. extractor is a lot better than people are willing to give it credit for.

I’ve put thousands of rounds on a model 700 action and never had a failure. This is the first issue I’ve ever had with one. I feel like it’s my fault because the brass was a little tight and needed a touch more bump. I was trying to see how tight lol guess it was a little too tight and when I closed the bolt I felt it snag a little and well now here I am. Oops. I did work on it and got it a lot better but still not quite like it was. I just took a punch a dead blow hammer and lightly worked it down then sanded it just a touch. It is a lot smoother but I won’t feel ok about it til I get it properly addressed

I don’t know if it raised the extractor lip when I shut the bolt or just roughed up the edge a little or what it did exactly. When I put a case in the bolt face and compress in the ejector I can move the case from the face of the bolt to the extractor lip. This travel is around 1/16 maybe. Does that seem normal?

You probably already checked, but many of the rare issues with Remington extractors are due to brass shavings in the groove. They can be difficult to see and remove and it's worth a check.

Called the builder and they no longer do anything with 700 actions. Strictly defiance unless the customer provides something different. They also said customers are responsible for all necessary parts

I had completely the opposite experience shooting thousands of rounds through two 700s in F-Class, classes, load development and practice. The faster I ran the bolt the more problems I encountered but those problems went away after the upgrade. I can't think of a single modern 700 clone from any of the good manufacturers that uses the Remington style extractor. Remington has done many things over the years purely in the name of profit e.g. trigger issues, bolt handles falling off, extractor etc. The Sako or M16 extractor is an affordable upgrade and one that I benefited from but that's just my experience.

In the over 100 Remington 700's I have owned, I've not had even one trigger problem, keep them CLEAN and leave your hands off the sear engagement (unless you absolutely know what you are doing) and they are just fine.

Bolt handles don't fall off, they are beaten off! I've had a few 700's come into my shop with the handles off, and in every case the handle was beat on, trying to remove a stuck case!! (from improper reloads)

Which brings me back to the extractors. Even the ones that had the handles beaten off, still didn't have damaged extractors! I'd say, those extractors are pretty tough!

the shop that built my rifle said to run it and in the event that it failed my best option is to have the bolt modified for the m16 extractor. He also said it would throw my brass up at a higher angle towards the scope. I’m fine with the factory extractor as I don’t shoot competitions. I may shoot this particular rifle 100 times a year but it doesn’t matter if I can’t find the parts I’ll have to do something different. Really kinda disappointing

I have seen quality issues with Remington 700s through the years. More in the latter. My gun in particular had to have the bolt retimed so it would cam out the empty case properly. X mark triggers are far from perfect but they do work. Love my timney though.

Anyone know how successful you can be to lightly pull the extractor out enough to clean behind it and not mess it up?
