I’m planning a long roadtrip for this spring. I’d prefer to bring a .22 rifle and a .38 revolver (possibly my .44).

Reading up on west coast gun laws. Seems like if I keep it locked and ammo in a separate locked area of the car, I am legal?

Obviously no CCW but itd be nice to have a pistol when camping.

Am I missing something?

You can have the ammo in the same locked container, just keep the pistol(s) unloaded.

CA views your campground as your home away from home. You can have a loaded pistol on yourself. Just stay within a reasonable distance of the campsite.

Be sure that the pistols don't have a threaded barrel (muzzle end), no mags over 10 rounds.

True, forgot about that, thanks MistWolf!

Being an out of state visitor, not having a CA I.D., I don't think any gun stores will sell to you. You can ask while here but I don't think it will happen.

I would bring ammo, if you have a receipt for it, bring it as proof that you bought it out of state. That and the fact that it's for your personal use while on vacation.

Sounds ridiculous but with the new ammo law, I would CYA!

Good to go in Washington, especially if you stay in or east of the Cascades. Aside from our newly acquired reputation as a liberal cesspool, that's pretty much restricted to the greater Seattle area and a pocket or too on the West and South Sound areas (well, Bellingham has tipped over the edge as well, I'm told). Open carry is legal and not uncommon. And you could buy ammo all you want in Washington if you could only find it these days.

California is kinda nutso. For the most part (and with some notable exceptions) you're going to be ok if the weapons are unloaded and kept in locked containers other than the vehicle's console or glove compartment. Except as discussed below, there is no requirement to store the ammunition in a separate container.

Keep in mind that California has two different definitions of when a weapon is "Loaded." It's important not to confuse the two. The general definition is that a weapon is "Loaded" when there is ammunition in the weapon that could be fired through the normal manipulation of the weapon. There is California case law that shotgun shells in a buttstock sleeve did not make the weapon "Loaded." Under the special definition of "Loaded", a weapon is loaded when there is ammunition in the possession of the person possessing the weapon, irrespective of whether its in a locked container or not. The special definition applies to specified government buildings, certain parts of the city of Sacramento, gun shows, and where the weapon is carried in the course of a felony.

It's also worth noting that the first time offense of unlicensed CCW, or of Carrying a Loaded Weapon (where prohibited) is a felony if the weapon is not registered to the offender in California's registry.

This is for national forests in CA, the fires and threat of fire are keeping them closed.

Be sure to check before you make the drive out to them. If you're going to be in SoCal, L.A. area, PM me. Maybe we can hit the range and do some shooting. Check out Angeles Shooting Range, in Sylmar CA, www.angelesshooting.com

Alternative to National Forests if not open due to fires.

I’m not worries about ammo. My brother and I are trying to hit all national parks west of the mississipi in 90 days. Illl shoot a few cans here and there.
Open carry is legal, and not uncommon in Olympic National Park. Shooting, however, is not legal, and you cannot take your firearm into the ranger station or the visitor centers. Hoh Rainforest, Hurricane Ridge, the waterfalls, tough to do in one day ... but worth it.

How are you traveling, car, camper, motorhome?

Hwy 101 from CA through OR and WA is a real treat. PM if if you choose to travel HWY 101!

Smiles,

Purchased a toyota corolla for the fuel economy, going to outfit it with a roof basket and a lock box.

Would a remington 572 be WA/Cali/OR compliant? It holds more than 10 rounds but is a pump .22 rifle.

. 22 pump action rifles aren't on any lists, so you're good to go in CA.

Here in the state of walking Cuckoo-Cuckoo clocks, free legal advice is as accurate as the electricity being on.
Ask you question here;
https://www.calguns.net/calgunforum/index.php
There's a legal section you can search and some incredibly bright people. Might be worth a phone call to a gun lawyer because if you get it wrong here - and it's easy - you will loose property and liberty for zero gain.
The laws can and do vary by county and even city. Typically, rural area are normal and people are mostly cool.
Store you weapons in a locked container (trunk works) and the ammo should not be accessible. Don't get caught with a weapon in a state park. I've never seen a law that says you can have one in a national park, either. Right now, almost everything in the woods is closed or strictly restricted. Watch your fires of any type. Some of the bigger parks (Yosemite for example) are full of thieving dirtbags. Watch your valuables. Don't leave them exposed in a locked car. I know people who had their mountain bikes stolen from their camp while they slept.
I do know bringing ammo into the state, for me, is a felony. I've never looked into from your perspective. If I shoot in Nevada, I buy ammo there, use it all, and come back empty.
Rimfires are often exempt from the stupidity. Lever guns can be centerfire with a tube magazine.
People in bigger cities and their burbs, I would consider gun-unfriendly so watch you conversations on the subject. Not all of them are, but the zealots are nuts.

Have fun!

There are five of those NP in Utah, and don't forget Nevada before you head to Yosemite (assuming the fire issue is taken care of)

Keep everything locked up in the trunk. Pay for your trip by selling ammo as you meet w/members along the way. I keeeeeeeeeeed.

Sad to say but I also heard recently that CA is not allowing you to bring ammo IN from out of state either.
Out of state residents legally traveling in/through California can bring their own ammunition in (so long as they're not selling to CA residents).
