Hello everyone
I have been considering buying a Rock Island Armory Pistol, my father has one and he likes it alot. The only thing I don't like about it is the badging on the slide. The huge lettering and shield. Then today I found a almost identical 1911 only it said High standard instead of Rock Island Armory. Are both of these guns made by Armscor of the phillipines? Also does anyone have experience with both of these pistols??

The High Standard G.I. model is the exact same thing as a Rock Island Armory, made in the Phillipenes, but with different markings and comes with a 7-round mag of unknown-to-me manufacture compared to the 8-round Novak mag that comes with the RIA. Warranty service is even handled by ARMSCOR in Nevada, that services the RIAs, rather than High Standard itself.

You may also want to look at Charles Daly's 1911s, which are also Armscor guns but come with extended beavertail, skeletonized trigger/hammer, etc. Creature comforts, so to speak, and only marginally more expensive than RIAs. I like mine. :)

I am actually interested in a fairly stock 1911. The only thing I want to do is change the grips. I am looking for a work a day gun with no frills. I want it as plain as possible.

I think High Standard is made in Houston, TX

If it manages to fit the legal definition of being "made" in houston, i'd like to know what the definition of "made" is in relation to firearms.

the High standard 1911s are the same Armscor produced guns HS's parent company was selling under the IAI (Isreal Arms International?) name a few years back, just with some cosmetic redesign to make the non-GI models less blocky and more "1911 like"

they might be final fitted and/or finished here, but the major parts are still coming from armscorp. and i can tell you first hand (had examples side by side once) the fit and finish of the HS GI model is no better than the RIA guns of the same configuration. on the two i compared the parkerizing even matched between guns. so i smell BS.

to sum it up, save money buy the Rock Island. instead of paying extra for a rollmark.

Oh BTW to finish my personal reasons for "buy the RIA, luuke!". others from the area may know of one (on the north of town maybe?), but ever since Top Gun of Houston changed owners, i have not found a single gun shop selling even one "Houston" High Standard pistol of any model, be it 1911, supermatic, or resurrected AMT. and to me when the dealers in the same town as your headquaters and supposed "factory" won't seel your goods, THAT means something.

now couple places had HS marked ARs in late '05 early '06 but no pistols, and let's face it when all you do is assemble them from subcontracted parts, ARs are adult erector sets .

I had a Charle Daly. The frame and slide had real nice fit and finish. The insides were junk. That can be fixed relatively cheaply.
