I was invited to go hunting.
I was told to get a 12 gauge long gun for Chukar, and a 30-06 or around that for Buck.
I was told at Big 5 I can run a slug through a 12 gauge and have good accuracy up to 100 yards or so.
I saw a 12ga Rossi, feels nice enough for the $150 they want, of course the guy says if it goes on sale its typically $100-110.
Well it has a smooth bore, but Rossi's website says it has a modified choke. I can not feel any choke tubes so its actually made into the barrel? Is it safe to shoot slugs, rifled slugs at that? Anyone who has a Rossi 12 gauge would you like to chime in any additional info?

Thanks.

It will work

Yes you can shoot slugs through a modifed choke .

But if it's that light single shot , it will knock you for a loop , big time .

:uhoh:

Try the Remington Reduced recoil number first .

Then , get an appropriate shotgun , if you still have a shoulder capable of shooting .

Any lightweight single shot 12 gauge is apt to rattle your cage pretty well from recoil when shooting slugs or any other heavy load. But you can safely shoot rifled slugs out of the gun you describe, if you want. It's the SHOOTER which determines how far a slug can deliver useful accuracy as a rule, not so much the gun. Although the gun can in some cases help or hinder the shooter's efforts.

If you aren't familiar with various models of repeating shotguns, I'd get a more experienced friend to help me look for a good used pump gun. You might happen across a good deal for about the same money as the retail price of the new single shot you're looking at, and you'll wind up with a more versatile shotgun. It's easy to swap barrels on modern models, and the more popular models like the Remington 870 have a pretty good supply of extra barrels available in good used condition as well.

Around here good used 870 Express guns are running closer to $200 nowadays, but I don't know the used gun market where you are. Usually the gun will come with a 28" vent rib barrel fitted for interchangeable choke tubes from the factory. A little more shopping will net you a 20" smoothbore barrel with factory installed rifle sights, which will help out a lot shooting slugs and will handle buckshot well also. The same is true for Mossberg's Model 500, though their factory rifle sight slug barrel is usually 24".

fwiw,

The fins on a "rifled" slug aren't there to impart spin but rather to easily crush down when passing through a bore restriction. The early forms of the Forrester slug had straight finning till someone realized the marketing value of putting them on a slant and calling them "rifled slugs". You can shoot these through even a full choke without any damage. Many have found a Mod choke provides the best accuracy with them however.
