Good morning,

I guess with this being my first post it's customary to do a little introduction.

Age sixty...Viet Nam vet...live in central Oklahoma...married to a great gal for over 33 years...have shot millitary bolt rifle competitions off and on for years with a Swede 96...have been shooting IHMSA silhoute matches (again off and on) since '85' with Contenders and XP-100's and was the local IHMSA Match Dir. for four years, 2000-2004....hunt & fish.

Anyway, I'd been trying to find one for quite awhile and I finally located and picked up what looks to be a brand new and unfired Rossi 720 .44 Special last Thursday.

Here's a little on the pistol;

Unfluted cyl....stainless....external hammer....adjustable sights....not stamped Taurus anywhere so I assume it's pre Taurus....3" barrel....stamped made in Brasil, Interarms Alexandria, Virg....factory Rossi insignia rubber grips....srl. # AB064***.

On most if not all 720's I've seen pictures of, M720 is stamped in front of .44 S&W Spl on the right side of the barrel but mine does not have any mdl. number stamped in front of the .44 S&W Spl.....just a factory oversight ?

For defense carry loads I picked up a couple boxes of factory loaded Hornady 180 gr. JHP XTP's......I've had Redding .44 Spl. dies for awhile and I recently ordered 500 of Midsouths Hornady 180 gr. JHP XTP blem bullets and loaded up fifty last night over 6.7 grains of W231 and Starline brass, this sound like a good practice / plinking load that won't beat the gun to death ?

Based on the srl. number is there any way to get a aprox. date of mfg. ?

For those that have or have had a 720 how do you like them ?

Thanks....Ike

I purchased my M720 new in November 1996 for $260, serial# AB10XXXX, so I guess yours is a little older. Mine has the fluted cylinder and adjustable sights (looks like a slightly downsized S&W M696). It weighs 30 oz empty, and has a very nice 3-1/2 lb single-action trigger pull. For self-defense purposes, I really like the CCI 200gr GDHP load.

Some people like to dump on the Rossi revolvers, but mine has been 100% reliable. It was a lot less expensive than the M696 (which is why I purchased it originally), but carries very well and handles any .44 Special round. I've found the Rossi M720 to be much more "refined" than the Charter Arms revolvers, and people at the range often ask to look at it, and then comment favorably on it's feel and construction.

Seriously, as a small, handy, stainless steel, big bore, inexpensive revolver, I think the M720 might be the best "pickup gun" ever invented. Nice catch on yours.

Thank you for the comments and links fellas.

I don't like the crowds so I normally go to the range at day break or just before the end of good shooting light after supper, I'm fortunate in that the outdoor range / gun club I belong to is only five minutes away.

Anyway, I went after supper and hung paper at 15 yds. and shot 20 rounds of my reloads. Standing I fired three wheels full single action and one wheel double action.

Single action I was just a little bit low and left of center with about a 2" group. I won't embarass myself by mentioning my DA group size but let's just say I need more practice firing DA.

I own a couple .44 Mags and have put a lot of rounds through them through the years but I never have fired a 44 Spl., I guess all my mind was seeing was the .'44' and I was prepared for some recoil....I was very pleasantly surprised, with my loads to me it was close to the felt recoil of a warmish .38 Spl.

I own several higher priced revolvers made by S&W, Ruger and Dan Wesson but I must say I'm VERY pleased with the way this M720 felt and fired.....she's a keeper !

I own a Taurus 431 in 3in. Best carry gun I believe going. It will do all I need it to do. It is a great ccw weapon. I just bought a 720c. I should be taking posession of it in a week. It is going to be the house gun. I stoke them with Blazer 200 GDHP. I think these are the best going for SD. I role my own for the range. 200 rnsp backed by 7 grain Unique.

There are some barn burner .44 Special loads out there, but most seem to be pussycats.

Glad you folks ike the .44 Special and appreciate what it can do.
