Hi fellas, running some 44 specials dummy loaded rounds( starline brass, speer gold dot 200grain) through a rossi 92 44mag and they feed and function nice and fast.

But examining the bullets afterwards they had some massive dings on the nose. A bevel almost flattening or collapsing part of the hollowpoint at the nose.

Is this to be expected running 44 special? I never had this problem with 38 special in 357 is all.

Doesnt appear to be happening when loading it, I think its when the cartridge enters the chamber. The cartridge comes up at an angle on that lifter and it must be hitting something at too acute an angle?

When single loading the cartridges into the chamber they slide in fine with no damage, When cycling from the magazine slowly there is a slight catch point but they chamber fine.

Full speed they run fine too, but boy do they dent the side of those bullet noses

Without being able to see it yourselves, anyone encountered this before?

They are relatively short so the lifter has them entering the chamber at a steeper angle which is what’s causing this.

aha thanks, well thats something gunsmithing isnt going to fix. what a pity I thought I was on a winner here with my lightly loaded 44 specials and hollowpoints, they ran through the lever so nicely. but that level of damage could effect them opening at low speeds.

A small amount of beveling and polishing in the right spot alleviate the problem.

Just don’t want to remove too much material.

Are you sure the damage is happening during loading? My Rossi 92, 357 throws the empties into the next county. Could possibly damage loaded rounds during extraction/ejection.

Curious if your Rossi is a newer, current production model. I bought a new Rossi R92 44 last year and unlike yours, it feeds 44 spl great, but 44 mags are hard to cycle. 50% of the time I have to work the lever twice to get them in the chamber, as if the rounds are too long. Looks like some loose manufacturing tolerances

Yes its a brand new CBC stamped gun, 20"barrel in stainless. The LGS owner had used it for some kind of western action ad or display and as such didnt mind me cycling brass through it. I guess I was happy I found one that cycles my 44sp HP so well, would be good to use the same load in both firearms.

I guess another question is being I have only owned 2 lever actions, I am not that experienced. Is it to be expected in pistol carbines they are harsh on HP? Maybe my expectations are way too high here.
