To each their own, but it seems like a loading gate is a small trade off for a polished gun that only requires a little extra saving over the Marlin, which will probably need tinkering. If you're the mechanically inclined type who doesn't mind dealing with all the various screws, pins, and springs inside of a levergun, knock yourself out.

I'm admittedly somewhat lazy and aggravated by small parts. I'll go with something that's smooth out of the box or maybe even a design that's a simpler machine. I think that even I could take apart and reassemble the bolt from a bolt action rifle with only a moderate amount of swearing and post-project drinking.

And if my life ever takes a turn to where I think protracted gun battles might be a real possibility, I'll either obtain something designed specifically for the task, or take a hard look at my life choices. The chances that I'll ever need a "tactical top off" of a levergun are so low, it doesn't factor into my decision making process.

But again, that's just me and I'm not a traditionalist.

Henry's sale rep told me today that loading gates are definitely something they are considering in the future. Couldn't give me details ,but they are well aware of the hatred some have towards their tube loaders. I guess Marlins days are numbered when that happens. I have to believe that they are going to eventually jump on the loading gate band wagon. They have been coming out with new products and are always improving their rifles. I'd still rather have a brand new rifle with a tube loader than a Marlin that requires me to finish it. Maybe Marlin should just market their rifles as kit guns. So people know they might require some finishing. Maybe I'm being biased because my recent experiences with Marlin's quality control and customer service haven't been great. I just like Henry as a whole much better than the Freedom Group.

I haven't seen the Rossi 92s in 357 in stock on Bud's for a long time. I've heard that Rossi does their production in runs every few months or so, but I don't think I've seen a 357 in stock for almost a year.

Today I checked to Rossi's website, and the only 92s they even mention are in 45 LC.

I don't get it. Does Rossi not make 357 lever guns any more? Do these guys just hate making money or something?
There is one for sale on gunbroker. http://www.gunbroker.com/item/689565679. Sorry guy's but I love my Henry, best rifle I have. Tube loading doesn't bother me at all. Been loading my semi-auto Marlin 22lr that way since I was a kid.

The thing is with those links....you know they are not going to go for that. Around here the 357's in pounded to hell shape take $600, and a nice one can fetch $800+...SOLD PRICES NOT ASKING PRICES....ahh screw that. Taylor looks better and better with each passing day....at least I will get something that IS something. IMHO Henry is just not worth their asking prices...but a Taylor....yea that would be do-able....very do able.

I wonder if there is still some kind of royalty still with the gate hanging out there....I would doubt it, but I dont' know.....that would make the most sense....for those I dont' see henry doing anything till they have to...

I have played with a lot of henry rifles and I don't know why, but I am just not a fan....the single taylor OMG....that thing is art, and put together with some pride.

Now Marlin....just so sad....and I love old marlins....I am a model 60 guy and HATE the 10/22, and it goes past that.....I would love to see the company turn around...and all they would have to do is make a 357 lever and sell it in the new straight wall pistol states....but, as with most companies run by bean counters never happen till it is too late.

Used to be able to buy R92 357 in any combination of:
Materials: Stainless, Blued, or Case Hardened.
Barrels: 16" round, 20" round, or 24" octagon
Lever: Normal or Large Loop

That used to be quite a few 357 R92 options.

I got my R92 357 about 3 years ago. I looked for a Rossi for some time. The ones I found were ridiculously priced. I wanted 16", large loop, and stainless. I found a 16" with large loop in blue and figured 2 out of three weren't bad. I only got about 10% off MSRP but it was the first one I found that wasn't outrageously priced.

The only mod I did was clip a couple of inches off the magazine spring. Loading is easy and functions fine. I will get a metal follower eventually.

BTW, my loading gate is metal.

I see the 24" octagonal barrel model is no longer imported. I have a buddy with one that is NIB. He recently said he doubts if he will ever shoot it. I told him I would take it when he was ready to let go. I don't care for either the octagonal barrel or the 24" length all that much, but I guess I had better not pass it up.

I have the standard length round barrel Rossi 92 in 357 and I really like it. I do like the look of the 24 inch octagon barrel Rossi but it is soooo heavy, especially in 357 that I just didn't want to lug it around. The standard 92 is so light and handy.

A few years ago I was at a gun show and saw a Rossi Model 92 in .45 Colt with the 24" octagonal barrel. With it's color case hardened finish and Marbles rear tang sight it was quite the looker. Definitely a little bit muzzle heavy but still felt good when you shouldered it. Would have got it too but didn't have the cash on me for it.
