Well. I found an issue with my M720. The forcing cone is starting to splinter. Not a crack, but the cone is chipping. It is from the revolver being out of time, and the bullet hitting the cone.

All is not lost.
M&M Gunsmithing to the rescue!
These are smiths from the Alexandria, VA Rossi shop from my understanding. Rossi/Taurus recommended them to fix the revolver.

I have a replacement barrel from Numrich, but it is an adjustable model barrel. It is in good shape, and I have it in hand. I spoke to M&M about finding the original barrel, and was told what I already knew. Good luck in finding it. :)
I am sending the revolver into M&M to have the timing fixed, the new barrel put on, and here is the best part...They are going to cut the barrel to look like the fixed sight profile, and install a night sight front blade. Then they are going to bead blast the stainless.

It should come back in great shape. I have read good things about this shop, and the person I spoke with is very knowledgeable and polite.
This is the revolver that I want to carry. I want a strong framed .44 Special, and I will pay the extra cost to get it fixed proper, and add a few nice additions. The trigger pull is just smooth, and the accuracy is really good. It just needs a little tender care to put it back into 100% working order.

I am expecting that it will be a very nice shooting, and a very good looking revolver when it gets back. I will put up pictures when I get it back.

I have 2 Taurus 441's in 44 special. Made by the same people. It sounds like yours is just as sweet as mine. Sure glad your getting it fixed and will be happy.

I have a friend here on THR, corner pocket, who just bought a 720. He is excited about his. Hope it works for him also.

Does your buddy have the fixed or adjustable model? I was glad to find the fixed model because the barrel and sights are tapered in a way that it will not snag on clothing.

I have a picture from another website that I am sending to M&M for a reference of how I would like the bead blast to look.
I'd carry a .45 ACP revolver if there was a good one for under $900.00. Also, I am setup to load for .44 Magnum, so loading for the .44 Special will not be an additional cost.

My revolver might last forever if I just had the timing fixed, but why not go ahead and get it completely setup the way I want. This will be my first Gunsmith customization to a firearm. I am excited to see how it turns out.

Here is the pic I am sending to M&M. Of course my revolver will not have the wood grips. These pictures came from Google images.

Glad to hear the 720 will be repaired.

No matter the weight of the .44 Special slug, it's going to whump something. :)

You have got to post pics!

I love the idea of a tuned, custom 720; glad you found a good 'smith who works on them!

UPDATE! Gun is finished, and ready to be shipped

Well I got the pictures back from M&M. I didn't get the fiber front sight. The measurements wouldn't add up to shoot POA.

Here is a pic that was sent to me, and I will be posting more pics when I receive the revolver. I am glad the M720 is back in use!

I own a 720 as well. It is the fixed sight version also. But I changed the bobbed hammer out for one with a spur. I just like it better that way. It is my main ccw weapon. Love carrying it. Love to shoot it. It has a super smooth action. Flawless. I load my own for practice. 200gr lead roundnose. For defense, I shoot Blazer Gold Dots. There are nio flies on this weapon.

Very nice! That doesn't look like a night sight. Are they going to swap out sight blades before sending it to you?

I put this in my post.

He didn't have one that would measure up. So we left it off. Not a big deal.

My guess is that there was a lot of material that had to be removed from the target barrel to make this profile. I asked that he make the blade shoot poa/poi to 25 yards. So he might have did the math, and cut the blade for what I asked him to do. If the smith didn't have a front sight blade that would fit hose specifications that is fine. I will put a Crimson Trace or the like on it, and go about my business.
I have another picture where you can see the crack in the forcing cone. The smith took a target barrel, and cut it to profile the fixed sight model, and then bead blasted the revolver. .

Oh jeez. I guess just demonstrated my early morning reading skills! Lesson learned. no posting before coffee.

I'd love to see more pics when you have it in hand. I think that would be a wonderful carry gun! Congrats on getting that work done.

It is okay.. I haven't had any either, and I have been up since 04:30. What am I thinking. I need to go get some. Here's to us getting some coffee!

Isn't the M720 just a fine looking firearm. I really like the fixed sight model. She has a better trigger than any Smith I have had the pleasure. I know that Smith guys will dispute that, but I am telling you this thing is smooth as a babies bottom. If not better it is just as good.

Now to get a shoulder rig, and an in the waist band setup. It's a little heavy for the pocket. Especially when loaded up with five rounds of Forty-Four Special.

Dan Shideler, in Gun Digest 2011,page 277, has the 720 as a "jewel". 4 paragraphs on why he says so. It's under " Editor's Picks".

You and he would be right. :)

I saw a 720 for sale in a NC gunstore yesterday...3'' fixed sights, spurless hammer. The sticker price was $375.

It was definitely rough around the edges but would have probably looked much better with a bead blast job or time spent with a Scotch Bright Pad.
