Hello all, this is my first post to the forum.

I recently purchased a Ruger 10/22 and there seems to be a pain issue on the receiver.

I have shot it twice. After shooting it I thoroughly clean it as I usually shoot about 500 or so rounds.

The pain on the receiver is peeling off and the ejector port(lack of a better term) paint is gone. I know that people are complaining that the paint is flaking off the inside of the receiver(big deal), and that is of zero consequence.

I clean the receiver and bolt with Hoppe's #9 and spray it off with Break Free Powder Blast. Is this a problem others are having?

Any suggestions?

Thanks.

Break Free Powder Blast peeled 50% of the finish off of the inside of my 10/22 stainless deluxe walmart specials receiver(before the gray looking barrels) in only a few seconds of contact but I think Ruger knows this finish wasn't very good and has been repainting receivers for customers. You should contact them about it. They might have a decent powder coating of something by now. My receiver showed very good machining so i might just polish it.

... this is the new ruger standard for any 10.22 made in the past 2 years; all plastic parts, as many as possible anyway, and just bare, drip dry paint, on all metal parts. No bluing. No anodizing. This will happen to ALL YOUR PAINTED SURFACES!!! including inside the receiver.

The receiver on my 10/22 is pretty much bare aluminum all inside, and around the magwell and ejection port thanks to Gunscrubber. On the plus side I have the Muzzelite stock so the receiver isn't visible. Gunscrubber also turned the surface of a Butler Creek Hot Lips mag all gooey and melted the follower to the feed lips.

i had some paint issues with mine as well
i dont think the finish inside the reciever gets as much attention as the rest of the gun
my solution was to remove the paint from the inside and polish the heck out of it
on top of resolving the issue of the paint chipping i also ended up with a smoother action (dont expect miracles just a bit better)
now i have at minimum 10000+ rounds through mine and no corrosion has showed up i shoot it regulary (every sunday since i got it) and i always clean it after so maybe my dilligence for a clean gun keeps the corrosion away i cant say for sure

thankfully the ruger 10/22 is competly customizable and there is tons of info on the internet
you can try

www.rimfirecentral.com

and unless this is a keepsake or heirloom my suggestion is just polish it and happy shooting

I don't care if the INSIDE of the receiver has the paint flaked off. I am worried about the outside of the receiver paint flaking off. The edges of the ejection port is starting to do that.

If it worries you then call Ruger and see what they have to say. You're probably not the only one to have this problem, but even if you were, I bet Ruger will make it right.

stchman,

Please post the response from Ruger. It will be of help to others with the same problem.

I called Ruger and they said to send them the receiver with a letter stating the problem. They will repair or replace the receiver at their discretion.

I think if the simply used a super tough resistant paint then there would be no problem.

The shooting and accuracy are no affected, just cosmetic looks.

I use only Hoppe's Gun Cleaner (does an amazing job of removing gunpowder and never harms the finish) and Rem Oil. Never had a problem with paint peeling with either of those.

So new 10/22 owners, take note. What seems to be the least harsh that's readily available at Wal-Mart is Hoppe's Gun Cleaner (for the bolt) and Rem Oil (for everywhere else on the finish).

I've put several thousand rounds through my 10/22, and I'd shoot about 250 each time out and clean it afterwards. So after many, many cleanings, I've never had a problem with the paint coming off.

All I've ever used is Hoppes #9 and their gun oil, and the paint on the receiver on my new 10-22 began flaking immediately. Primarily on the inside of the receiver, which I find more disturbing because the paint flakes can end up in the action (already happened) and into the bore and barrel upon firing. I don't want to take apart my 10-22 and have no plinker while I wait for Ruger to do something about it. I think I'll just hope for the best...

I hate to say it, but you guys are paddling upstream. Even if ruger... ahem...
' fixes' the problem, it is going to immediately occur again. Why? because the
finish, they have decided, on all metal parts, is just going to be painted; no bluing, no anodizing, no hard coating, no parkerizing, nothing. So the paint peel effect will happen inside, and outside on the receiver/action/bbl, no matter what you do to take care of it.

would it be a huge expense to have the reciever anodized black or some other more durable finish put on? i have always wondered it might be like to have an unpainted but black finished 1022..............
