I have the Ruger 1240 (All-Weather Stainless/Polymer) model 10/22, with the factory stock, and want to replace the rear open sight with a Williams WDOS U-notch or U-blade plain black open sight. I want to keep the original factory front sight (this one: http://media.midwayusa.com/productimages/880x660/primary/753/753153.jpg)
I don't have a very accurate way of measuring the factory rear sight to compare, and I am also unsure how Williams is measuring these, so I want to ask people around here what the proper height sight and adjustable range is (the WDOS open sight system is adjustable) and ensure that the type of sight I'd like to get will fit.
Really, once I buy a new rear sight I intend to sight it in at 10-20 yds and forget it. The adjustability is not a big deal. U-blade is more attractive than U-notch to me for the intended application.
I suspect that for the closer distances in which I'm shooting, the 1/4" size would be preferable, but the U-blade is only available in 5/16":

The closest thing in 1/4" is the U-notch:

If I can make the 5/16 work I'd like to get that one since it's the preferable configuration of the two.
So to recap, my main questions are: what is the proper height sight/range for my application (close-in shooting - accuracy of course is important but I do not need sights optimized for 50-100 yds+), and are the WDOS series set up to work with minimal hassle with the 10/22 (which has a fairly short distance between the dovetail and the breech)? Am I way off and/or missing something here?
Any other insight or experience, of course, would also be appreciated. However, I'm definitely not interested in peep sights or a different style of sight.
