This is by far my favorite .22 pistol and is my go-to for training new shooters. With the Volquartsen sear and trigger (around 2 pounds), Clark bushing, Hi-Viz sights, and Kingshouse grip mod and large mag release, shooting it is an absolute joy. Grips are by JP. Here's an old pic. I removed the bolt charging handle as it kept walking and also my kids' hands got strong enough to not need it.

I took my 15-year-old son to his first handgun match yesterday and it rained ALL DAY and got windy/cold and seriously uncomfortable the last half hour or so, so I figured it was time to detail strip the Ruger again for the first time since I installed the VQ guts when basically new, and dry it out/clean/re-lube it. Since the VQ mods (at which time I also removed the lever from the LCI and the bolt stop spring and plunger) we've put at least 10,000 rounds through it without detail stripping it. I would CLP/wipe the chamber area and re-lube the bolt occasionally, but figured it didn't really need to be sparkly clean as long as it kept running reliably, which it always did. I think I had the upper off and the bolt out for a wipe once , but the lower has not been cleaned.

So those of a sensitive nature may want to avert their eyes.:D

95% of the rounds fired have been Federal Champion bulk, plated. Actually not much crud considering the number of rounds IMO. Pistol still running flawlessly BTW. The bore looks pristine. I swiped it once with bore shine and took a look and it appears to be perfect.

While detailing the bolt I found a set of parts I didn't know existed, and which I'm not sure I should have removed... it appears to be a flat spring with a post formed in the rearward end, onto which a very small coil spring slips. This appears to be the firing pin return spring (and possibly something else that I can't figure out). In any case, I planned to brush it clean in place but the coil spring came off and I noted the front coil or two had broken at some point.

Will Ruger sell me a replacement? Any tips/caveats for reinstallation?

Also, is the extractor retained by a pin or just by its plunger and I assume an internal spring running front to back behind it? I'm leaving that alone I think.

Okay looks like there may be 2 different rebound springs... Ruger parts online lists one for the MKI/II/III and brownells lists one for the MKI/II and a different one for the MKII 22/45, with a kind of closed-off end or smaller coils on the very end.

Which one is correct for the MKIII 22/45?

Thanks

I'm not a Ruger Mk owner but I'll chime in with what I think to be right. I think you need the spring for the Mk III.

Im a newbie and this a complete inspiration to me (minus the spring). Im glad to see that these guns are so tuff is my point.
Thanks for the pictures.

Looks like most of mine, not just .22s, when I actually take them fully apart, usually not until after I've had an issue :)

The dirtier a gun gets and keeps running, the more confidence I have in it.

After 2 hours of detailing, it's looking better now.

However I seem to have forgotten what this spring is... I assume it's the VQ sear spring. There's no room for it in the frame with the long/loop end next to the frame per the usual assembly instructions... the only way it will fit is with the long/loop end to the inside of the frame. Can someone please confirm that's what it is and how it goes in? Like I said, it's been a couple of years since I put this thing together last. :)

Last "after" pics. I can't get the bolt completely back together until I get the new rebound spring from Ruger, but you get the idea. Looks better, don't it! :D

I recently discovered that same spring broken in three pieces in one of my guns. I discovered it because I was getting misfires and went looking for the problem. The new spring solved it.....I have several MKs in heavy service, so I keep a bag of spare parts from Ruger around.

there's a guy on RFC that sells blast shields that prevents the lower from getting as gunked up.
