Hey all. I have recently been looking around for a .22 pistol (ammo is no problem for me, I can buy some from my dad haha) but anyhow I am considering the 22.45 among a few others. Only thing is, what model should I go with? There are several different ones out there and depending on if I can find someone who will sell to an 18 year old at the gun show which should I go with?

FEDERAL LAW NO HANDGUN UNDER 21.....period!

Try to find a nice Mark ll, it will escalate in value every year...period...especially in stainless.

I like the basic ol' 4" bull barrel model. It gives you plenty of heft if you DO want to use it as a 1911 trainer, but it remains packable and steady enough to use it as a trail gun.

I guess I might look at the light version some day, but for now the basic model is boringly accurate. If I had the space to shoot, a dozen soda cans and a 500 round brick would equate an afternoon of good clean fun:evil:

Once you reach legal age a Browning Buckmark is 10x the pistol a 22/45 is.

My thoughts exactly. Esp. one with wood grips that would look nice :).
I have some wooded land within walking distance of my house I use for shooting, it is awesome. Basically I have a rifle range, skeet range, handgun range (don't own a handgun yet), and some trenches to practice run 'n gun with. Hours and hours of fun.

You have to be 21 to own a hangun, no matter who was dumb enough to sell it to you. If you think someone at a gun show is going to sell your 18 year old self a handgun i fear you are sadly mistaken.

That said the 22/45 with the bull barrel and replacable grips is sweet.

Wrong.

Federal law (US Code Title 18 Section 922) prohibits possession of handguns by juveniles (under most circumstances) and defines juveniles as being under 18 years old. It also prohibits FFL's from selling handguns or handgun ammunition to anyone under 21 years old.

Geez, finally someone who gets it. I just want to point out, guys, this is one of the most misunderstood laws I know of. But please stop just assuming that just because I am 18 I don't have a clue about firearm laws. I have taken a course in Criminal Justice and I know the law fairly well.

Hey us younger guys have to stick together. Even if I am older than you and would still call you a kid.

As to the people who keep repeating that it is illegal for anyone under 21 to own a handgun just remember that US Code and ask them if they have ever actually read it. That usually shuts them up, or it causes them to say how they don't have to read it, they have lived long enough to know the law or some such non sense. Just shake your head and walk away from those you will never win. Trust me.

And to stop hijacking your thread, I prefer the standard weight model with the threaded barrel and adjustable sights. It has a good weight to it and will allow you to mount a suppressor if you ever decide to get into NFA items.

That's right. In most states you certainly can buy a handgun from a private individual (not a licensed dealer) before you turn 21. Federal law only prohibits an FLL dealer from selling to you.

Having said that...while I certainly like the 22/45, the older MkIIs seemed like the pinnacle of the quality .22 autos. Not as blasted finicky as the Buckmarks and at least as accurate. Nearly as accurate as the S&W 41s (let's be honest, most of us can't shoot well enough to blame the Mk II for not hanging with the 41!) at a fraction of the cost.

Thank you Mike Sr. and Ben86 for the opportunity to educate people on what the REAL Federal statute says. I would kindly direct your attention to 18 USC 922 (x):

http://www.law.cornell.edu/uscode/text/18/922

18 USC § 922 - Unlawful acts
(x)
(1) It shall be unlawful for a person to sell, deliver, or otherwise transfer to a person who the transferor knows or has reasonable cause to believe is a juvenile—
(A) a handgun; or
(B) ammunition that is suitable for use only in a handgun.
(2) It shall be unlawful for any person who is a juvenile to knowingly possess—
(A) a handgun; or
(B) ammunition that is suitable for use only in a handgun.
...
(5) For purposes of this subsection, the term “juvenile” means a person who is less than 18 years of age.

Mike Sr. and Ben86, would you care to provide us with the references for your statements, please? I'll give you a hint: you are MISINTERPRETING 18 USC 922 (b)(1), which can be read at the same link I posted above, but I would still be interested in seeing any other reference you might have for your statements.

Be advised most gun shows in Washington state are run by the Washington Arms Collectors. They are a fairly anti-2nd Amenedment organization that allows only WAC members to buy and sell at their gun shows. They require you to possess either a CPL or pass a NICS background check for full membership that allows you to purchase firearms at their shows. You certainly could pass the NICS check for a rifle or shotgun, but NICS would not approve you for a firearm other than a rifle or shotgun until you are 21. I refuse to join such an organization that desires to place such limits on private sales, so I cannot tell you exactly what their terms are for you to purchase a handgun at their shows being less than 21 years of age, even though such a transaction would be perfectly legal in a private party sale.

Oh Please lets try to keep things real and on topic. He asked about Rugers not BM's. To answer OP's question. The 22/45 RP target with the five inch bull barrels is pretty sweet.

I am a fan of the MKII models, but if you want wood grips you are looking at the MKIII, as the MKII doesn't accept wood grips without modifying the grip frame. It can be done, but you will spend a few $$ to have it done right.

Hope you find what you are looking for. :)

Thank you for educating me. I don't mind admitting when I'm wrong and I do appreciate truth and accuracy. I have been told wrong for several years now by many "experts." Even many cops i know have this wrong. I know a few people that will be happy to hear this.

Personally I have thought that allowing 18 year olds to by shotguns and rifles from FFLs but not handguns is absurd and I hope one day that law is overturned.

OP, good luck on your future purchase. I also highly recommend the S&W M&P .22 pistol if a more "defensive pistol" type firearm is desired. Mine has been great even after thousands of rounds. It's not even picky about ammo.
