Hi guys, I'm new to the forum so I hope I am posting this right. I have a ruger 22 Mark 1, I think, that ever since I have had it has the clips jam when I try to release them. I took the barrel off of the pistol and tried the clips. They ejected. That surprised me because it has never happened since I have owned the gun. I bought the pistol from a friend of mine a long time ago. He gave me 3 clips with it and none of them eject like I have seen. Unless I remove the barrel. Then they drop like they should. So my question is do you think the clips I have can be reworked , or should I just dump them and try to find new clips. Thanks

Do you mean that your magazines don't drop free? This is normal for that pistol. You release the magazine using the heel latch, and pull the magazine free by hand.

If the magazine refuses to budge when you hit the heel catch, then you have a problem, but if you need to manually extract the magazine then everything is fine.

Sistema nailed it. And as to the clip / magazine thing as long as you communicated your meaning to others, and you apparently did, who cares what it's called. Heck, you could call it the bullet holder thingy that goes in the gun for all I care. I know what you mean and that's what communication is all about, making yourself understood.

This will now turn into a long winded discussion on the clip / magazine / call it what you will thread.

does the clip drag with the bolt forward, as well as back? I could be wrong, but no slide lock on the Standard 1 right?

Yep, the problem is the magazine refuses to budge. When I push on the heel latch the clip doesn't move until I pull on the clip. Now if I remove the barrel and insert the clip into the grip, then when I push on the heel latch, the clip drops down where I can easily grip it and remove it. Barrel installed, I have to struggle to get the clip out of the grip. And thanks for the video. I've called a magazine a clip all my life and didn't realize I was wrong. Appreciate it.

I just pulled my 1958 vintage Standard Model (Same as the Mk I, but with fixed sights) out of the safe, and when I depress the heel catch the magazine just barely moves and needs for me to grab it and extract it. Recognize that these were not "high speed, low drag" tacti-cool pistols, and it was never considered important to have speedy magazine changes.

And, if you are not aware (based on an earlier comment by mjsdwash), while these pistols do not have a slide lock, you can lock back the slide by applying the safety after pulling the bolt back.

Sistema1927, could you do me a favor. Break your Standard down, by that I mean remove the barrel, install the clip/magazine and then push the release. I'm curious if you get the same results that I do. When I do this , the mag pops down like it almost fell out of the handle. That's what is confusing to me. Its like something is jamming the clip/mag.

That happens because there is no longer any contact of the feed lips with the upper. I can get almost the same result by locking back the slide with the safety. I also note that my original magazine, with metal base, extracts easier under all conditions than replacement mags with plastic bases, probably due to the fact that they are heavier.

Unless you cannot pull your magazine out after engaging the heel catch there is nothing wrong with your pistol. If you want true drop free in a Ruger .22 pistol, then try a 22/45. With my Mk IV the mags jump out due to the spring loaded pin in the base of the grip.

Just a thought. I had a Standard model MKI. The magazine release had a slight bend to it. Similar problem. Might want to check it out

MK 1's have 2 different grips. The magazine buttons were on different sides.
The last new replacement mag is for the newer MK1. Under the grips mine is marked A-100

If the mag body is wider than .365" it may stick.

The lips of the mag may contact the bolt, if bent out of shape?

Is the barrel fully locked back in place on the grip frame? Some take a lot of pressure to return to the correct position.

Thanks 243. that seemed to be the problem. I measured the front lip and I was getting a reading more than .300. I figured I didn't have anything to lose so I closed that front lip slightly and that seemed to fix the problem. Now all of my mags will release like I thought they should. I never expected them to fall out but I was getting tired of really pulling on the mag to get it out of the pistol. Seemed like no matter how or what I did , they jammed , but now problem is solved. Just curious as to where you found those dimensions. I looked but could not find them myself. Thanks guys for the help.
