I recently found out that the kel tec was unavailable in California. Does anyone know if the Ruger will be sold here?

Probably not. Whatever safety features the P3AT lacks that keeps it out of California, the Ruger lacks, too. No safety features were added such as, external safety, mag disconnect, drop safety, etc. Other than cosmetics, the ONLY thing different feature about the Ruger is it has a manually operated slide lock, which isn't a safety.

Interesting... I ran across these specs for the LCP. Am I reading that this pistol is going to have a "plastic" FRAME...RAILS? :uhoh: Even the lowly P3AT has an aluminum frame with rails which is inserted in a "plastic" grip.

Yes, that's what you're reading but it's not what Ruger should have written. The polymer thing that you hang onto is the grip. The serialized frame is the steel thing that is pinned into the grip and holds all the working parts. Other makers seem to have gotten the nomenclature correct for this sort of thing, I'm surprised that Ruger let this slip through.

According to Ruger's specs, it's not approved for California or Mass. Too bad for you guys living there but I for one am glad that they're not pandering to those anti-gun states and effectively nationalizing their stupid laws.

It is interesting to see Ruger make a small pistol....The P-series pistols are well...blocky

Ruger's P95 has plastic frame rails.

My other observation: Almost every little .380 10 years old and more looks to be a copy of the PPK. A lot of current 9mm's look like Glocks. If Ruger changed the styling there would probably be much less chatter about its similarity to the KT.

Also I still have quote tags on my posting thingy (reference to pg4).

I have always wanted a small .380, the Sig 232 is a top notch firearm but it is large for the caliber if concealing is involved. That pretty much left the NAA, the nearly impossible to find Seecamp 380, or Keltec. Keltec was never an option for various reasons. The Keltecs are ok, but I could never actually depend on one for protection. Now that a reputable company decides to produce a .380 in a size and weight that is acceptable, I will definately buy one.

Next year maybe they will make an aluminum framed SP101?

I have a gun show coming up in two weeks. Will have the cash with me.
The Ruger .380 is exactly want I'm looking for.

(Hmmmmmmmmmm..... hope they are not all sold out by that time)

Saw this for the first time yesterday on Ken Lunde's 2008 SHOT show photo page. My very first thought was "Wow, Ruger is making an improved Kel-Tec clone… I'm getting the first one I see."

I had been saving for an expensive mouse gun, but this looks like it will better fit the bill in terms of what I want to spend for the amount of gun I'm buying. I love the Kel-Tec concept in terms of size & weight, but upon holding one… it looks and feels like a cheaply made toy.

If you are not legally protected, any company can -and will- move into your turf if there is money to be made... and Ruger is going to make a LOT of money on this.

The flaws in the KT are many, and very widely known- all Ruger needed to do is keep the good points, fix the known flaws and improve the fit & finish to make a much more attractive offering. If this gun does that (which I am 99% sure it will) I can't see many folks buying a KT in a side to side comparison, even if the Ruger does cost more.

Sad to say, but this will hurt KT badly.

I hope it hurts KT so bad that they'll be forced to improve the quality of the P3AT as there are a LOT of crappy ones out there. I have one those crappy ones myself...

Just got an email from DeSantis showing they have several holsters to fit the new Ruger.
Other companies will follow as soon as possible.

I would think any pocket holster that fits the keltec would also fit the ruger. I have the p3at and don't like it much. I don't know why this would be any different, but I would like to try it.

It says right on Ruger's website that they will be available in mid-March. I too will be one of the first ones in line to try one out. I've been hoping for years that Kel-Tec would improve the quality and durability on their product, even if it meant having to charge more for it. Since they refuse to do so I see no foul in Ruger giving the gun-buying public what it has been screaming for.

I'm just glad Ruger is finally remembering what firearms are FOR. They aren't for law enforcement they are for armed citizens to protect themselves. I'm sure this weapon will also find its way into BUG mode for many officers as well.

Copy or clone.........That will be my next gun. Provided it don't have alot of initial problems.

I might have to get a couple of those after cruise when I go home to Illinois. They look pretty neat, and by then hopefully the bugs will be worked out of them.

I sold my Bersa last year because it was too big for a .380. I replaced it with a Glock 36 that weighed about the same, took up about the same amount of space, and packed a .45 ACP punch. I have nothing against a .380, but for the same size and weight, I'll take a .45 every time.

But the Glock is too big for pocket carry, and there are times when that is the only reasonable option. Right now I pocket carry a 642, but that leaves an unsightly bulge, especially when wearing lighter fabrics like those used in dress slacks. I've been looking for something smaller, but the only thing that works sizewise was the Kel Tec. I love my PLR-16, but the overall quality doesn't inspire confidence. It is accurate at amazing distances for a pistol and packs a serious wallop, but it takes a lot of TLC to keep running reliably. It needs to be very clean and well oiled to keep from being a jamm-a-matic, and I have to clean little bits of plastic receiver shavings off of it after every use. This doesn't make me inclined to go with a Kel-Tec for a carry gun.

I'd been thinking about one of the ridiculously expensive little pocket guns like the Rorbaugh (sp?), or maybe a Kahr, though they are really too big for what I have in mind and in my experience their out-of-the-box reliability has been spotty at best, too.

Now it seems like Ruger has made the exact gun I have been waiting for. I can't wait to try one out, and if I like it I will probably buy two--one for me and one for my wife.

They would need to only add a ( largely cosmetic and not actually used by anyone I know) safety to the trigger a la my Seecamp LWS32's.Unfortunately,that adds another $100 to the MSRP to a fairly expensive for its size pistol, but it's the only like option that we have and I'm glad that they at least think enough of us to allow us to have the option.

Who knows if Ruger would find 2 markets worthwhile but if one was available for $350-375 real world MSRP,I'd possibly give one a try.Not for any good reason as I doubt my Seecamps will wear out in my lifetime or anything. If you'd like to see something truly incredible, you should see what a USED Kel-Tec goes for on a MA guns shop's used shelf :eek

I bought a S&W 337 this week for a summer pocket gun. I thought the P3AT had some kick its a pussycat compared to this sucker! I'll take a slightly less powerful caliber if I'm able to shoot it better. The snubby will have it's place but I'm sure that Ruger will spend the summer in my pocket!

If I did not already have my amt 380 (works like a champ), I would be in line for one.:)

I't looks like the kel tec for sure.I was getting ready to buy a kel tec now I'm waiting
