YEP. I did do some thing wrong

Sorry about that. This may not be the right thread for this but, I'm looking for some one that is very familiar with the Ruger 44 auto loader. I posted in general gunsmithing but didn't find what I was looking for. Can anyone help.

Thanks.

Well, I'm sort of familiar with the old Ruger .44 Carbine, as I have 2 of them. This is the tubular magazine style. Ruger also made a Mini-14 style .44 semi-auto more recently. I don't know anything about those except they use a box rotary magazine kind of like the 10/22.

What do you want to know?

1. They like full power ammunition. Don't even think about .44 Specials.
2. They don't like cast bullets. Jacketed bullets only, or you will foul the gas port.
3. The 102- and later series have a button near the loading port that makes unloading easier. The early models didn't have this.
4. They are OK with iron sights, but a lot of users have low power scopes on them. I have Leupold VXII 1-4X on mine. I've heard hog hunters like red dots, too.
5. Ballistics are "similar" to .30-30 out to 100 yds. Good for deer & hogs.
6. The magazine tube and lifter are critical to the feed process. If these are gunked up, you will get failure to feed. (I know about this...)
7. If you don't seal the inside of the stock, it can swell up and impede the action. Sand it down for adequate clearance and coat it with polyurethane varnish or similar.
8. I replaced the plastic buttstock with a metal part, available from Brownells. These don't break.

Aha! I read your post in the other area and I see you're having trouble with the cartridge stop. I'll look at this the next time I'm in town, (where the .44 Carbines are), and for now I'll look at the manual.

See the other posting...
