Ruger 480

I do not believe the cartridge gives up anything to the .454 and .460. Except maybe a little range to the .460 with standard weight bullets on deer-sized game. Unusable range, I might add. IMHO, velocity is way overrated, as is energy which is heavily dependent on velocity. The .480 slings a significantly larger, heavier bullet and that is the difference that matters. The lighter 275's and 325's can be pushed to 1500-1600fps and that is serious deer medicine. Easily shooting flat enough for 150yds.

I have the 9.5 SRH & The BFR 475/480... Its a good hunting gun especially for deer. Accurate as hell and shoots just like my 44's to me.. Killed deer with both guns using 325SPEER and the 420 BTBWFN...Ruger is selling them again in the SRH stainless! there posted on there website again...

Ruger brought the .480 back it looks like. I have a .475L FA83, but like the .480 better, the .475 is just too much of a good thing. I'm hoping to get an Alaskan in .480 to keep my FA company.

I have my eye on a 480 Alaskan also. Have no practical use for it. But I have always wanted one. I think it is probably the best "bear medicine" that comes to mind in a practical size.

Some shooters need educated on the 480 and if they were, I think it could be as popular as the 454 Casull. Making statements that it is just a heavy 44 diminishes it's significance. Because it can be so much more. For one thing, it makes a bigger hole.

I don't own a 454 revolver, but if I did, I can't imagine shooting anything other than 454's in it. It is a case of why bother? The Super Redhawk is a now a proven platfom. I tend to be in the slow and heavy camp versus fast and light camp.

sounds like most of us have the same gun, I have the SRH 7.5 barrel and will never get rid of it. I also have a Puma 92 lever action in 480. makes a great pair. recoil is tollerable, I feel its less than a 44mag but I've only shot about 20 rounds of 44mag, so take that for what it's worth. power: more than you''ll need, I think a lot of power talk or "on paper" is over- rated. I dropped an elk at 70yds with one shot on factory XTP ammo, I would worry about any game in north America.

Also since I reload and the cartridge is in regression, I've found the brass is in the clearance bins of retailers. so when I walk through any place that sells reloading gear I keep an eye out for brass in the clearance section, so far I've gotten 4 boxes of Hornady brass for $20 each. I don't lose many rounds of brass so I have plenty for a 6 gun and a lever action.
