Does anybody reload their 5.7x28 ammo. I cant get most of mine to go into battery. You can hear the firing pin go forward but does not contact the primer. If i load single MOST of the time it will shoot. I haven't taken the polish off. I'm shooting a Ruger 57. Shoots great with factory ammo. Any help would be great.

Sounds like out of batttery condition. Something on your round is out of spec not allowing the the bolt to close. If the barrel is removable use it as a test gauge. Mark up the bullet and see where it's contacting. On a chambered no fire ejected round, look at the bullet to see if its into the lands.

The necks are BAD about stretching on that case.

They will probably need trimming every reload. Did you check the case length or am I not understanding your question?

Yes, they were perfect AFTER I trimmed them. COL was perfect also. They just won't go completely into battery.

I hopped off that train, temporarily at least, because of the neck stretching and the coating.

Figured they would be a pain.

I do! & for the Ruger 5.7. There is ZERO wiggle room for loading 5.7x28. This is what I had to do to get the bullet in straight.

1 trim the case
2 use a M profile expansion plug
3 use a Franklin Universal Precision seating die

Then it worked. anyways, have not done it in 2 years, Did it and shelf the project for simpler fun reloading projects.

Sounds like a good idea. Thanks

DO NOT start by trimming the cases.
Here is a link to how I use a Hornady #5 (.260") comparator bushing as a headspace gauge.
Sheridan also has a headspace gauge for this cartridge
And actually I did start by trimming the cases☹️ live and learn

Yes, trim AFTER sizing. They will get longer when sizing.

So far, I have had good luck reloading 5.7. I've had one case separation - it separated just behind the shoulder. Hornady 40 and 35 Vmax bullets, and True-Blue, BE86, and Power Pistol powders.

Try a Noe M profile expansion plug. It goes into a Lee Universal Expander die. It will help insure those tiny little .224 bullet goes in straight and true.

Load development: Start very Min and work up, look for pressure signs as you go and you will get an idea of a good charge. that case will separate after like 5-8 loadings. Some people load 4-5 and toss them!

I personally can’t wait till factory ammo get’s to 9mm prices

Yea, i have already had a blown primer.

Another thought. Have you measured the shoulder. Most of those little cases will push the shoulder out when fired requiring you to bump it back 2-3 thousandths in order to fully chamber. Might be worth a check. Measure a factory round and compare to your sized brass. If you want, you could measure unsized brass, too— but sized brass is the shoulder measurement you need.

5.7 really pushes the shoulder out, A LOT. You can’t just bump them back 2-3 thousandths like you can with locked breech guns. Being a blowback action, the case is extracting immediately and continues while there is still significant pressure.

I have an AR57 upper that I have installed a very heavy buffer in it to slow the movement down, but it still pushes shoulders out significantly.
