Hello peeps. I just got a brand new Ruger 556. This is my first AR. How do I know what model or whatever it is. It says Ruger 556. But when I go and look them up mine has a different forend, the guns never been shot maybe it's had the forend change and I don't have a front sight on the barrel. Idk diddley squat about Ar'S but I've always wanted one so I'm in this one for about 400$. Thanks for any help or information.

New rifle for $400 wow ! Ruger web sight list three AR Models Standard ,MPR and Free Float handguard.

Ruger has/had about 3 different visual variations of AR in 5.56.

First, there was the high end piston operated SR556. They don't make them any more and are pricey. So I doubt it's that.

Then, they have 2 major platforms of AR556. The standard and the MPR.

The standard is a basic carbine with the front sight.

The MPR uses a more modern rail system.

All the Rugers can have different factory accessories, such as Magpul furniture or others. Just depends on the model. Have you browsed all the options on their website, including distributor exclusives?

Click each model and then scroll. They have a ton of variation on their models.

I assume you bought it new from a store?

Great information thanks, that's really good to know.

Congrats! They are great guns!

I set up an 18" for a family member as a "frontier rifle" for all manner of critters at all distances in all situations for life in an Alaskan coastal village.

From the gas, to barrel twist, to metal finish, to their Ruger 2 stage trigger, it's a great do-all rifle with no guilt during hard use.

I think you'll love it. For optics, check out Primary Arms for good-for-money choices.

It must of been a opened box return or from a private sale. Its not NIB for that ($400) price.

No sir guy bought it and wanted to sell fast for other projects. It was in the box still.full of the oil the put on them
It was from a Private sale, not NIB but you have no idea if it was fired or not. Most people including me could not tell. Did you check the SN to see if it was stolen? Transfer at a FFL?

I know the man very well and I do know it's never been shot and I know it wasn't stolen, does that work for you brother.

If you did not purchase brand new then its second hand without a warranty. In any event its a nice gun.

You'll get a lot of help and advice about shooting and the Ar platform. Having owned many including the Ruger, I have a couple pieces of advice specific to it:
1. Stay away from cheap no- name mags. The composite ones I use are Mag Pul, MFT, and Hexagon. I also use some metal mil surp mags, but they are hit and miss. You don't know until you try them, but at $5 each I'll take the gamble, been lucky so far.
2. Stay away from steel cased ammo until you get a couple hundred rounds thru it. After that, steel case is fine, but new chambers can be tight and cause some issues with steel cases until they break in a bit.

Well you got a heck of a deal, when are you going to shoot it!! I put a SIG red dot sight on mine, first decent one I have had.
Shot it today just for function test, I ran a full magazine through it. Close range the little red dot on it is cheap I think.but it ran flawless. Going to clean it really good was excited to shoot it. I was thinking about a good red dot just have to see.

Yup, had a cheap red dot on mine and then got the SIG Romeo 5 and what a difference. You will love that gun, I got Wolf at Aim Surplus for $7.99 a box of 20 cheapest Wolf I have seen and I will not use any other steel cased.
