Thanks, I'll look into that. I should also try it on paper at some point. Get some real numbers rather than happenstance.

There is a LOT to soak in there. I have been amazed by how much standard deviation in velocity there is with some fairly reputable ammo. It really comes into play beyond the 50 yard line. I think they have determined using ballistics programs and through actual testing that 50 FPS in velocity difference can result in nearly 3.5" of vertical difference at 200 yards. It's not uncommon to see 100 fps of deviation in run-of-the-mill 22 ammo and up to 200 with 22 magnum.

It's been a great time killer while I am socially distanced.

That is an interesting thread. And I've collected a pile of odd ball 22 over the years (up to the random single boxes of tenex for testing) -- now I know what to do with it. When I mention Remington Gold bullet btw, that is pre-hoarding era stock when it seems the quality was much higher from Remington. The gold box stuff, not bulk either. Seems like quality in a lot of ammo dropped during that period of hoarding.

Also a good excuse to drag out my much neglected chronograph. That three and a half inch variance due to 50fps is interesting. And I wouldn't be surprised at all to see it.

I'll bet it will be an eye opener.

I bought one when they first came out, blued steel and walnut. Classic stock, what’s not to like? Was it a target rifle, no. Did I buy it for target shooting? No, I have target 22s. Is it a decent rifle for walking around the woodlot? Yes.

I did not add shims to the bolt but read that will improve accuracy. I did bed the action. I also at some point swapped out the barrel. That improved the accuracy but I need to sit down and put it through a series of testing and make changes bases on results. I have too many irons in the fire. A nice problem to have but still a problem!

I have an older wood stocked one when they first came out. Put a fixed Leupold 4x rimfire scope on it. It has been a good shooter, very reliable.
