Of course, I'll have to remove the barrel from the stock, but I was just wondering what kind of tool to use to dress the sharp edges on this piece. Straight mill bastard file (mine is actually for metal, I think) or a Dremel wheel, or what? Thanks

I would just use sandpaper/sanding block. Those plastic stocks are pretty tough against the elements, but it's still rubbery plastic so it doesn't take much to sand them down.

I did mine barreled action still in, using the tip of my pocket knife to scrape them down. 2 pases and the edges werent bothering me.

There is no practical reason to replace the stock. With the bedding method they use you won't imporve accuracy and could only make it shoot worse. The action is resting in metal V blocks and no part of the plastic stock is in contact with the bottom of the action or barrel. The original versions had a floppy forend that could touch the barrel if enough pressure was applied to them. Even those shot great with a generous free float. I used sandpaper wrapped around deep well sockets. Ruger quickly stiffened the forend on more recent rifles.

A file or sandpaper will easily do what you want. A dremel will to, but if you're not careful it is easy to take off too much. Of course leaving it won't hurt a thing either.

On plastic or fiberglass you'll get your best results with wet/dry paper dunked in water frequently.... done properly, starting with 220 and working into progressively finer grits you can remove any "edges" and can actually do it to such a level that you won't be able to see that it was worked on.... Working around small skiffs the way I do you learn a few tricks.

Almost every Ruger American ive seen the left forearm touches the barrel without pressure.

I have 2 and i took a file, rasp, and sandpaper to them. Didnt take a couple mins each and i was finished. Looks nice and clean.

I wouldnt use a dremel but if you do a little goes a long ways.
