Ruger American

I'm thinking about upgrading my deer/elk rifle to replace my Mossberg 810 that was given to me when I was 13, (1977). I'm seriously considering the Ruger American in 30-06. Anyone out there have one and how do you like it? I handled one at the LGS and it appeared to be a very solid rifle but lightweight with a nice recoil pad. Hard to beat for $345.

Worked with one, quite accurate. Smooth bolt. Very light weight for carry. Great recoil pad.
I don't like detachable mags, but others do.

I was also looking at the American rifle. This will be my first true rifle, and wanted info on a decent entry level 308. I haven't handled one yet though....
