Ddmrj1,

I too reload the .30 Carbine. I have chosen to start with ALL new brass. Here are ingredients to my recipe:

14-15 gr of Hodgdon H110
CCI small mag. rifle primers
115 gr hard cast (BHN 22), gas checked bullets, or
110 Berry's plated bullets
Starline brass

As far as the brass is concerned, Starline is as good as any and better than most. Starline guarantees their brass meet SAAMI specs. I've NEVER had any problem with case length and that takes into account I'm on my 4th reloads for some of these cases.

Tark and dbmrj1, try using optics to get the true potential out of your .30 Carbine Blackhawk.

Jski....thanks, but no thanks. I am allergic to anything but good old iron. I have 71 guns and only one has a scope, my 22 hornet. Like I said,....I need help....:D

Per Hodgdon load data, if using H110 and a 100 grain bullet in both calibers the velocity is MUCH closer than the above posted data. The 30 is using a 7" barrel and the 327 is using a 5" barrel. 1685 for the 30 vs 1525 for the 327.

I prefer AA9 for the 327. I get 1590-1610 fps with a 100 XTP shot over 2 different chronos. The ballistics are too close for me to fool with a rimless case to have a 30 carbine.

What is the problem? The .30 Carb. BH will fire the 32-20 rimmed case at .327 velocities with handloads. So buy the BH and have a more versatile weapon. :)

jski: I'm .2 gr above minimum start load of H110/296 in an older Lyman manual.

I use a 115 LRN Coated from Bayou Bullets.

CCI SRM Primers.

Range pick up brass, trimmed.

Sorry LOLBELL, you're peddling bogus data. The data below is directly from the Hodgdon reloading data website.

.30 Carbine with 100 gr bullet
Maximum Load H110
Grains 15.5
Velocity (ft/s) 1,762
Pressure 36,100 CUP

.327 Fed Mag with 100 gr bullet
Maximum Load H110
Grains 13.2
Velocity (ft/s) 1,525
Pressure 38,500 PSI

Tark, it's fun to see just how accurate the .30 Carbine Blackhawk is.

With optics I believe I could out-shoot the M1 Carbine (also with optics @ 50 yrds and 100 yrds). And I have a great deal of affection for the War Baby, I own 2.

I stand corrected jski, I looked at that twice last night and thought the 30 showed 1625. But if we are going to get into a uniration fight, the 30 has another 2" of barrel to burn that slow powder in. Since Ruger never made a 5.5" Blackhawk in 30 or a 7.5" Blackhawk in 327 we can not do an equal comparison can we?

I have chorono'd the 100 grn AE 327 at 1750 out of a 5.5 Blackhawk. I was told I was mistaken or the chrono was off so I got friends and multiple chronos and got the same results.

I just picked one up.

- It is very -- and surprisingly -- pleasant to shoot... no "huge-big-blast" as always reputed by those who don't have them

I can only surmise that you are already deaf. ;)

I don't have one, but I have experienced one first hand. Even from the other end of the range with muffs and plugs it was amazingly loud, a definite "what the @#&&$ was that" experience.

And yes, I'm quite sure it was a Blackhawk in 30 Carbine because I asked.

Got the gun today. It was obvious why the last owner got rid of it. Two problems, both extremely simple to fix.

The base pin was not aligned properly so the base pin latch wasn't holding it in place. Align the notches in the pin and the pin latch holds it in place just fine. DUH!!

The ejector rod would sometimes catch on the edge of the cylinder and fail to enter the front of the cylinder to eject the cases. Put a bevel on the front of the rod, which nudges the rod over so it will enter the cylinder. Problem solved. The cases themselves show no sign of sticking at all. With two of the chambers, they fall out of their own weight.

Put a half a box of cartridges through it getting the sights aligned. The gun was pretty much like I remembered from the one I had thirty years ago; not much recoil and a very loud, rather high pitched bark. Doesn't sound like a magnum, but still just as loud. Just a different kind of loud.

Before I knew it I was whacking cat food cans (6 1/2 OZ) at thirty yards or so. Ill put it on paper tomorrow. I'm guessing it just might (will be) my most accurate handgun.

Just touched off a couple of shots at night, out of curiosity.

YOWWWWWESER!!! Ball of flame the size of a basketball with flame shooting out of the cylinder gap on either side.

Looked like Kylo Renn's lightsaber!

Have you ever fired a .357 snubby at night? Same result.

Maybe it's time to consider reloading? For a proper .30 Carbine pistol round. Instead of using ammo intended for an M1 Carbine.

Good to "hear" you've got your new .30 Carbine up and running already! Would love to see some photos of the fireball at night!

No need to wait until dark, the fireball is quite impressive even in daylight.

The quote below is from a retired gunsmith and Ruger Forum moderator concerning the .30 Carbine Blackhawk v. .327 Fed Mag Blackhawk:

Raw power .... the 30 Carb wins hand down .... and it is also very accurate. Versatility in different platforms .... the 327 Fed Mag wins .... don't know about accuracy. I sold my 30 Carb Blackhawk .... it was a tack driver and would drive VERY LARGE tacks at a considerable distances.

Here is the gun, and a target shot today. Target is speaks for itself. Not bad for my old eyes!

tark, when I received my brand-sparking-new .30 Carbine Blackhawk directly from Ruger, it too had the WRONG ejector rod in it. It had the ejector rod for the .357, .41, and .44 mags in it. And It too stuck on the edge of the cylinder chambers.

tark, I too had the WRONG ejector rod come with my brand-sparking-new .30 Carbine Blackhawk directly from Ruger. But no fear, after a quick call to Ruger plus some email back and forth with pics, they sent me a brand-sparking-new .30 Carbine ejector rod. The ejector rod I had is the standard issue for big Bore Blackhawks.

I was up and running in no time.

Sorry, this is an almost repeat posting. Didn't think the other was posted.

I only load my own for this baby. She is a bit touchy about brass, but once I figured that out, no problems. A late '70's version, she is stocked in Hippo Ivory. :D

Really love the look of those ivory grips on the blued Blackhawk! Just plain awesomeness!
