I bought some Ruger replacement wood grips and put them on and they are too short, my hand falls off the bottom of the grip. I had Pachmyr grips on there originally and they were too thin for a good grip. This is mainly a plinker/hunting backup revolver.

I really like the S&W 29 and 19-5 grips. Does someone offer a grip similar to these? What about a conversion to Bisley or Vacquero?

I had the same problem with the grip frame being to short. I had a steel super blackhawk grip frame put on it. it is longer and the steel adds a little more weight and using Pachmyr grips it makes shooting the 41 mag a lot more comfortable.

Folks will take offense to this statement but oversized rubber grips basically ruin the fine handling qualities of a good single action. A single action is not supposed to feel like a double action and be grateful for that, for it transmits much less recoil into your palm. Just tuck that pinky under, as God intended.

My brother's stainless short barreled super blackhawk has a small grip as well.
The blackhawk hunter might work. But does Hogue or other make a wood grip with extension like the Pachmyr but wide like the factory wood?.

I loved the Badger Customs grips on the super blackhawk I used to own. However, they were actually huge grips. Too wide for most, but perfect for my very large hands. It doesn't look traditional , but they sure do work and allowed comfortable shooting of .44 mag for me.

why did you sell the super hexidismal?

No complaints about the SBH, it's an excellent pistol. I just found single action revolvers weren't my thing, at least to the point where when I wanted something else the SBH was the first head to get cut. Wish I had the money to keep them all, but at this point in life hard choices need to be made for what guns I MUST hang on to

Regular Blackhawks (not flattops) have pretty big grips anyway. Never had to tuck like on a SAA grip.

I have a big SBH, and I like the frame for the gun, but it's the 10 1/2" model so you sort of need the longer grip to balance the gun

Ebay usually has several Taylor grips for the BH, and also for the SBH; they don't interchange. They are wood, a bit large but extend an additional 1/2" to 1" below the standard gripframe. I got an unfinished set and dremmeled them down til they felt good to me.

Not really. The XR3-RED has about 1/8" more room behind the triggerguard but they are no longer than the XR3 of the flat-tops (or Colt SAA/1851).

Tucking the pinky under the 41 is more comfortable and I get a better shot.

I'll look at a Bisley conversion or SBH and the Taylor grips.

I want to keepthe look of the gun, so the Hogue rubber is not an option.

Here are some pictures.

Tucking the pinky offers a nice grip on the factory wood grips but not comfortable enough with magnum loads. Maybe if it was a soft 45 Colt, but not 41 magnum.

I didn't see "Taylor" grips on Ebay.

The ones I got were Taylor, but look like the Sile grip on Ebay now or the Jay Scott's if you can find some for the BH/single 6/Vacaro instead of Super BH. Look also under Single Six as they are interchangeable on the new models. The old models don't interchange with the new.

I have a Colt New Service. The grips on those are punishing -- a few cylinders full will leave you with a sore knuckle.

The only grips I could find for sale were repros of what I already had. A friend who does woodworking had some scrap walnut, and he kindly used his bandsaw to cut a few pieces to a cardboard template I had drawn.

I put the gun down on the blanks and carefully drew the outlines of the area to be inletted with a pencil. Then I used a 1/8" veining tool (about $10 from carving shops) to cut a "trench" along the pencil lines.

I have an old Dremel tool with a stand. I chucked a router bit in it and carefully adjusted the depth of cut. I would route out an amount equal to about the thickness of two sheets of paper at a time.

After fitting the grips to the gun, I shaped them with a bench sander, a Dremel rotary sanding bit and a shoe rasp.

I made them wide and hand-filling -- as you can see. Just the thing to tame recoil.

You can also see a gap or two -- I saved dust from the sanding and routing, and will mix that with epoxy and glass bed the grips later.

Here is a thread from the revolvers section that I had regarding replacing my SBH grips.

Here is the pic of what I changed to.

I have not shot the gun, but I know that it will change everything. It feels good, and different. I am looking for a grip that will increase my accuracy. I had issues with the smaller grips. I can aim better with these grips. I have noticed this from dry firing the revolver.
