hello,

on dec. 29 2008, i took my gp100 to the dealer i purchased it from to have it sent off to be repaired by Sturm Ruger. anyway, my dealer called me about 2 weeks ago to let me know that Ruger had informed him that my revolver was fixed and being sent back by U.S. Mail.

2 weeks later and still no gp 100. i am beginning to be concerned that my gun has either been misplaced, or stolen while in the mail. 2 weeks seems excessive to me. my question is this, is this normal for US mail packages to run this long? maybe this is normal, but i have always used fed ex or ups for sending or receiving parcels (never any firearms) and they always arrive much more quickly than this.

thanks in advance for the replies.

2 weeks is too long. I would think they would have sent it USPS Priority which is 3 days or less...

I'd contact Ruger with the serial #, find out when it went out and if they have tracking info on the package.

It would have been insured, so you should get a replacement gun if it was lost.

I sent my LCP in for the recall work last Saturday and got it back on Thursday morning. I would call Ruger and circumvent your dealer. I hope you have your serial number handy.

I sent in a couple guns almost two months ago and haven't gotten either one back yet. I think there's a long turnaround time right now because of the LCP recall. I would imagine that they're pretty swamped right now because of that, so it's possible that someone screwed up and gave your dealer the wrong information.

If you want, you could always call Ruger yourself and ask. The number is 603-865-2442.

Just for future reference, in most states you don't have to go through a dealer to send a handgun via UPS or FedEx as long as it's going to an FFL. The FFL can also send you your own gun back or one that's identical to it without going through an FFL.

How can the FFL send you an "identical" gun?, wouldn't the serial number have to be the same?

IIRC, the manufacturer can send you a replacement gun of the same make and model if yours is irreparable. The serial number would be different and in that sense, they wouldn't be identical. My bad.

thanks for all of the replies. yes i do have the serial number handy so i will be contacting ruger later today.

Engineer,
there were two issues. one was my gun was shooting about 10 inches high and 12 inches left of center at 10 yards with the sights perfectly aligned. to get my gun zeroed i had to adjust my sights almost entirely to the right.

the second problem was that i was experiencing a very very stiff DA trigger pull when one of the chambers in my guns cylinder lined up with the barrel. in other words, 5 shots had a very crisp and nice DA trigger pull, but 1 shot was significantly harder than the others.

When you send a handgun to the New Hampshire facility, you get a note from them saying they have received it with a Repair order number. It will be your only point of contact with them. Without it they won't give you any information.

I doubt very much they used the Post Office....

They'll give you the info with either the serial number or the order number. I just talked to them a little while ago.

+1

I've sent my SBH to Ruger twice for work. I dealt with them directly. The pistol had to be shipped priority overnight ($95!) only by FedEx or UPS. It is illegal to ship a complete firearm via USPS under any circumstances.

About 5 days later you'll receive a letter stating that they've received the piece, assigned a work order number to it and will have a complete description of the gun w/ serial number. They do this religiously.

As for getting your gun back, they won't call, email, or write. The UPS guy will just show up one day, ask for ID and a signature, and give you a very conservative looking brown box from "SRC" with your gun in it. If you're not home, you'll get a note. Regardless, you WILL have it delivered to you the very next day after they ship it back.

Your best bet is to call Ruger directly with the serial number. Ruger customer service is some of the best out there and will help you get squared away.

Best of luck,
-MW

It's still legal for an FFL to mail a handgun at the Post Office. Really, you can look it up. There's even a USPS form for it.

Even paying the dealer a transfer fee, it beats the heck out of the prices the other carriers are charging.

11.1.5 Manufacturers and Dealers

Handguns may also be mailed between licensed manufacturers of firearms and licensed dealers of firearms in customary trade shipments, or for repairing or replacing parts.

11.1.6 Certificate of Manufacturers and Dealers

A licensed manufacturer or dealer need not file the affidavit under 11.1.4, but must file with the postmaster a statement on Form 1508 signed by the mailer that he or she is a licensed manufacturer or dealer of firearms, that the parcels containing handguns (or major component parts thereof) are customary trade shipments or contain such articles for repairing or replacing parts, and that to the best of his or her knowledge or belief the addressees are licensed manufacturers or dealers of firearms.

I had a gunsmith nightmare that I hope no one ever experiences. Ruger stepped up when they really didn't have to and replaced the whole gun.

I've been using UPS and they do charge a lot because they require it to be shipped next day air. However, I've been informed on another gun forum that FedEx doesn't require next-day shipping and is a lot cheaper.

Even with the high UPS rates, I still think it's worth it to keep my off-paper guns off paper.

Of course Uncle Sam figures that if you and me own on-paper guns we also have some off-paper guns. Right?

I remember people worrying about this back during the run-up to the Gun Control Act of 1968. We need to fight more and worry less.

I don't own any on-paper guns. I was out boating one stormy day with all of them and the boat capsized in deep water. Never was able to find any of them. Tragic loss. :D

i made contact with ruger, gave them the serial number for my revolver and they told me that the notification they sent was only that they had recieved the gun, and NOT that it was on its way back. they told me this morning that it has just been sent back home. not through USPS. UPS is what i think he said.

Not the same facility. Revolvers are the NH facility, autoloaders are Prescott, AZ.

When I bought me GP 100 the first thing I did was take it apart and clean it inside and out. While taking it apart I saw the paw spring and plunger shoot out and fly across the room to never be found again. The next day I called Ruger and told them about my dumba$$ mistake and tried to order and new parts. They say no charge for the parts and I received them in the mail two day later. I would have to say I was pretty happy with their customer service.

Seriously, it's cool to ask them for tracking info when you call them. From my experience, Ruger does not ship unless it is UPS.

My only experience with Ruger's CS was the 5.5" SS .45 Redhawk I sent back days after I bought it new. Oddly, when I gave them the SN, they wanted it back - and sent me an authorization. It cost me nothing to overnite it to them. It came back by it's one month anniversary. Not impressed with their work, I sold it. Usually, you pay for the call to NH as well as the s/h.

I learned how to work on my Rugers, assuming that their's were delivered as 'kit guns', where 'kit' means something different to them. They were all, each and every one except for my first-ever DA revolver, a 7.5" .454 SRH, delivered as a 'work in progress', requiring deburring holes, bores, and channels as a minimum. The Redhawk had machined over voids between the cylinder bore exits, not awe-inspiring for what was heralded as a brick outhouse of a .45. I sent it back.

I like S&W. I sent them my well-shot 625-8, my SPC gun 9/02-5/04, 6/04. The yoke & cylinder had fallen out several times in the last matches - the yoke screw wouldn't stay tight. I had fun in SPC, although I was horrible at it - often reloading twice to get the stop plate! Anyway, the yoke was sprung - the cylinder wobbled and drug the f/c on one exit bore. I had it back on the eighth day. S&W has an 800# and will send you a pre-paid label for return s/h. Their warranty doesn't cost you. They even paid to have my 629MG returned, although it was in a body bag after I 'suddenly' dissassembled it into pieces it wasn't contructed from. S&W is top drawer, even if you don't need them as often. YMMV.
