Ruger/Gunsite Scout Rifle - gunwriters' review

That scout rifle is on my wish list. I hope Ruger continues to make it if and when Ruger drops the Gunsite name.

I asked, it is the Gunsite Scout Rifle, will retain the name for as long as they make it.

I'll bet the substitution of a reinforced fiberglass stock would lower the weight to 6.5lbs. I wonder why they are not offering that as an option or alternate....

Ruger new a poly stock would lower the weight, reason for laminate was to have a solid stock whereas stock could also be used for fighting, a hollow plastic stock will not ring the bell like a solid laminate stock.

if it took M14 mags i'd be interested, but for 1k i can get a much better rifle that takes much cheaper mags, for a few hundred more dollars i could even have an M1A

I would have liked to have seen some 100 yard groups with various types of ammo.
Plus chronograph readings of the aforementioned ammo types.

This was an introduction to the rifle, no time for 30 people to chrono and accuracy tests, more of a running evaluation. Will get a rifle soon for T&E.

Hmmm...single stack mag probably negates the stripper-clip charging anyway. So what's the reasoning for the forward-mounted optic, again?

Fast acquisition with both eyes open, no chance of getting smacked in the eyebrow, and an unobstructed bolt for rapid manipulation.

I have a few questions concerning this rifle for the OP if you dont mind.

1. What is the iron sight radius in inches?
2. Any specifics on chamber dimensions?
3. Any future plans to produce a version sporting an 18in bbl.
4. A chrome lined bbl in the future possibly?
5. You mentioned that they decided to go with a single stack over a double for reliability sake, but in your opinion, might have they done this for the sake of having a mag well that is narrower then it would have been with a double stack mag, thus reducing the over all weight of the rifle?

Thanks in advance

The use of a single stack mag somewhat surprises me since the internal box mag on a short action ruger is THE EXACT same shape as the body on a m14 mag.........

I just realized why.

When you install a M14 mag in a short action ruger you remove the feed lips and use the ones cut into the action instead. A single stack mag could feed from the center, be detachable and most importantly not require additional machining on an off the shelf action.

Good questions, can't answer most as it was kinda fast paced there and didn't get to really go over the rifle like I would for a review. I did purchase one of the rifles there at Gunsite and should be receiving it soon so I will be able to give it a good going-over.

Q-3 There was no mention of a longer barrel length, they we shooting for as light as possible and compactness.

Q-5 Was mentioned that if they would have decided to go with a staggered stacked mag then they would have to widen the receiver. They opted to not.

Was mentioned that a southpaw version will be in the future.

Ruger is working on polymer mags also.

Oh man, I didn't need to know that. Actually, my bank account didn't need know that. :)

I don't NEED a rifle like this.

I WANT this rifle, though. A lot. By the sounds of things, it's the rifle to have when you can only have one.

I have a few more questions.

Is the trigger guard made out of metal or plastic?

Is the bolt controlled feed, or?

How did the bolt feel....in comparison to that of an En field for example?

You should read the Ruger product info linked earlier in the thread.

The trigger housing is polymer.

It's controlled round feed.

i sure hope that is a joke. butt stroking people with a scout rifle? seriously?

well, it is a nice rifle, but that use case is about as viable as the tactical wheelbarrow.

If they make one in 338 federal or 358 win with a 5 round polymer magazine, I will happily buy one, put an aimpoint on it and use it as a brush gun.

they could have gone to a double stack/single feed magazine.

but then they couldn't screw you out of $100 dollars per mag while forcing you to only have 10 rounds because people would be converting other mags to work with it.

This rifle was designed to be your one rifle you take with you when the SHTF. Serious.

You don't buttstroke someone with an recoil absorbing (cushioned) adjustable stock, you do it with a metal buttplate. If you want a hand to hand bolt action then just convert an old mauser, at the very least you would get to retain the use of the bayonet lug which would be more useful.

This is not that great of a SHTF rifle, at least not with the plethora of semi-automatic rifles out there. At best it would make an excellent brush/guide gun.

The already tried cheaper mags like M14 mags but had problems getting them to work. They decided to go with a proven magazine that works in bolt guns instead of a proprietary design. Granted AI mags are expensive, but at least ruger learned from their past mistakes, one of which was people complaining that they were always making proprietary mags for their weapons. They might have also chosen said magazine type which are available in .308, 300WSM, .300 WM and .338 LM, making it much easier to produce different chambering while retaining the same magazine type.

Poly mags are on the way. 338 Fed. was mentioned as a possibility for the future.
