Ruger Hawkeyes Not Feeding Right?

I've heard a few rumors floating about that these new Ruger Hawkeyes, on many occasions, function like a push feed instead of a proper CRF. Meaning that instead of the round being pushed up in between the bolt face and the extractor it is just pushed in front of the extractor which then snaps over the rim once the bolt is closed. I'm wondering because I've been thinking about adding a Hawkeye chambered in a long action magnum to my arsenal. So, anybody having this problem?

So, anybody having this problem?

That is the way they are designed to work, and it isn't a problem.

The Hawkeye's work just like any modern non-military CRF rifle. VERY few work exactly as you describe, and there is absolutely nothing wrong with it. There is almost always a short time after the round leaves the feed lips before it is grasped by the extractor, but long before the round goes into the chamber. My Kimber and 4 Winchesters do the same. So did my Interarms MK-X as well as all of the Ruger MK-II and Hawkeye rifles I've owned. All fed perfectly, all will eject the round before closing the bolt.

The extractor on most military Mausers catch the rim instantly, but require the rounds to feed directly from the magazine and will not allow you to feed directly into the chamber or top off the magazine. To my knowledge all modern CRF rifles will allow you to do this now.

The original Ruger 77's, the versions with the tang safety, had the large claw type extractor, but were true pushfeed. There was no cut out on the bottom of the bolt face. It was impossible for the extractor to grasp the rim until the bolt was closed. That was changed in 1992 with the MK-II.

I have a Hawkeye All weather .30/06 and i love it. Its really accurate with my IMR 4350 reloads. I need to post a range report. No problems or concerns with it feeding.

My CZ 550 doesn't grasp it straight from the magazine...but I can single load straight into the chamber

The real benefit of CRF is positive extraction. In that regard, the Ruger 77 Hawkeye (I have one in .308 and one in .270) works well...indeed, mine have functioned flawlessly and are accurate as well.

FWIW, both my Rugers and my Win M70s will work both stripping a round from the magazine and "push-feeding" a round dropped on the magazine top. Both types fully engage the case rim and extract positively. While my medium bore is a Rem 700 in .375 H&H, I would feel very comfortable with a Ruger 77 .375 Ruger or Winnie in .375 H&H for the same game.

I have one in 25-06 and works perfectly fine. Either way, if your gun doesn't work, Ruger will always find a way to fix it and make their customers happy. Of all the compainies I have dealt with, firearm and nonfirearm products, Ruger, I feel, has the best customer service!
