Ok I'v been thinking about getting a 9mm handgun. a Glock 17 was my first choice, then was thinking of getting a XD after handling one.

Now I'm considering a Ruger KP89DAO handgun. I like stainless steel, and want a good quality handgun without paying an arm and leg.

I did handled a K89dc last week when I was at the gunshop. I liked it, but the mag release I had a hard time with. Is this a problem with new guns or something that goes away with time?

Well I couldn't push in the mag release. Today at work, someone who has the same gun told me that it slides intead of pushing.

Next time I go down there I'll handle the gun again.

Ruger mag releases slide forward, not push in, and it's easy to release, assuming you know how to work it.

I prefer the DC over the DAO. The Ruger is a rather heavy pistol, I wouldn't carry it unless I had no other option, but it's solidly built and will make a good range gun and home gun.

I had the same sort of problem with my P89 (manual safety) at first. I was trying to push straight in on the mag release nstead of foward. After I figured that out, the release works fine and requires little effort. My P89 has an ambi mag release and being a leftie, that was a big selling point.

My P89 is definately rugged and will give me 3" groups at 25 yards all day long. Ruger has a statement in their instrucion manual that basically says that any known factory ammo in standard, +P, or +P+ loadings made to SAMMI, US, or NATO standards will perform in any of the P-series pistols without problems. That says a lot about the strength of the pistols.

My P89 has Hogue grips on it and those grips make a big difference in the feel in my hand compared to the standard Ruger grip.

I think the P89 would be an excellent choice and a great value for the money! :D

the kp89

The first handgun I bought 10 years ago was that kp89. Full safety thuogh. I have had no problem with it. the thing is a tank. It is not the most accurate of the 9s. but you can strip that thing in 1 min. easy, and you'll have no problem qualifying with it. With a set of wrap around grips you are ready for action. I have put literally thousands of rounds through mine. I put 1500 through it in Jan. alone.

You should be able to rent it from a range around you. Rent it and shoot it before you buy it though. I am a firm believer in renting and shooting first. Then you will be sure that it fits the way you want it to.

You may want to check out the p95 also. It got great reviews. I don't know if it has hi cap mags for it though. :D

I see I can get deals on Police Trade ins.

When I get my refund I'll go shopping again.

I just bought a NIB P95 And yes, it comes with two 15 round magazines.

It's nice to know that Ruger ship it's pistols with a spare magazines. I noticed that some of the much higher priced manufacters don't.

I had a P95D and a P97D when I thought it would be cool to have a couple DAO Rugers. I bought a P93DAO and a P89DAO. They were cool looking, not having safeties and dekockers hanging off of them but were too hard to shoot, especially one handed. They sat in the safe for a year before I finally sold them off and bought another P95D and P89D.
