Ruger Mini-14: what do you think?

what about the rear sight was modified?

Andrew,

After cutting the barrel, the gun shot low.
I had to bottom out the rear sight to get it to zero at 25 yards.
That would have been fine (except I'm anal) but I wanted to have some latitude in adjusting it, and I wanted to open up the aperture some.
I called Ruger, and they sell rear sight inserts that are higher and lower than the factory supplied insert.

I ordered the lower one, ran a small drill bit through it a few times, and dabbed it with some cold blue.

Now, I see more daylight through the sight, and it's not down against the bottom stop.

Now, I can sleep at night. :D

Where in the world did you get the idea that I hate the Mini-14?
Bluesbear,
I wasn't actually talking about you in particular.
If you read this board much, you'll see that many people do hate the Mini guns.
It never fails that someone posting a question like "Is the Mini 14 good for self defense?", will, within three or less replies, get this: "Get an AR! Minis are junk.".
Even if the original question goes like this "I live in California, so I can't have an AR15. Will a Mini 14 do for plinking?".
Within a few posts you'll get "No, get an AR."

Actually they are not junk. They are one of the most reliable semi-auto rifles on the market. (With good mags.)
Just as an AR, in my experience, is a reliable design. (With good mags.)
And yes, it is possible to get bad mags for an AR.

As a shooter who's had an SKS, three AKs, a Bushmaster AR 15, 4 Mini 14s, and a Winchester 30-30, I just get tired of seeing the facts distorted.
(I think I need to join a support group. :uhoh: )
(And no, THR is not a support group. If it was a support group, my addiction would be getting better, not worse.) :neener:

Mini's are stigmatized because of Rugers gun policies, period. AK's are not particularly accurate and are never referred to as "junk", are they?

Yeah, if you search enough, you'll find somebody that will tell you that AKs are junk.
And I forgot to mention this above, but I've seen a damaged mag turn an AK into a club.

I was at the range last and shot my buddy's very nice Kimber CDP.
We've got a local gunsmith who is very crotchety, and opinionated.
When my buddy took his Kimber to him for a little trigger work, the gunsmith told him that Kimbers are junk.

Bill Ruger's actions before the ban really ticked me off, but I judge each of his guns on their own merit.
Most others do too.
If you look closely, you'll find that you don't agree with all the beliefs of any gunmaker.

i.e.: What do you think about the political and religious beliefs of the Romanian and Chinese governments that make the AK?
While I like AKs, I don't think I would agree with any of those guys on very much.

The owner of Kahr Firearms and I don't attend the same church, but he still makes great handguns. I do agree with him on right-to-carry issues, but I'm betting he and I don't see eye to eye on everything.
John M. Browning went to a different church also, but his firearm designs are still rocking the world.

Mini-14's....

I don't know about some of the older ones, but the ones they're producing nowadays can't hit the broadside of the barn and are pretty junky.

Sven- two rounds offhand does not constitute a group. You're as likely to get both rounds thru the same hole as at any other distance from one another just because of your own wobble.

I shot a Mini-30 that grouped Cor-Bon ammo into the 3" aiming black of a pistol target at 100 yards. It has a Hogue Overmolded stock. Later after it had a muzzle brake put on it, it kept Wolf ammo in the 6" aiming black of a different pistol target. Using a 4x scope, so it might actually shoot better than that but there weren't any of the smaller aiming blacks available.

However, the final 10 shots out of 50 on the day were strung upwards with about 3/4" between each. Not much horizontal dispersion; 1 1/2" max but the last 6 ot 7 were essentially right on top of each other.

Funny thing is that some of the shots would result in a "sproiiing" vibration, like an AR with a scrapey spring. I wonder if its Wolf powder variation, or loose tolerences in the slide.
