I can't find a thread on Ruger's Mini 30, just posts here and there. I have heard they are good and bad, reliable and unreliable. Accurate and not accurate.

I would like to buy an American made gun if possible (snd SKS or AK if not possible). My favorite choice is the M1A, but don't want to spend the $1,500 bucks for it. That's why I'm interested in the Ruger Mini-30, because the action is very similar and I've heard it is durable and rugged.

I would love to hear from those who have OWNED and/or SHOT the Ruger Mini 30s what they think of them, especially the newer ones with the heavier barrels. I would especially like to hear the numbers behind your comments, like if you say "not accurate", do you mean 3" groups at 100 yards, or 20" groups? etc.

Thanks.

I have had a stainless Mini 30 Ranch rifle for about 13 years,as I recall I bought it the day the Assault Weapons Ban passed into law.I put a 4X fixed power scope on it,and I like it.It will put a 50 round magazine into one fist-sized hole at 100 yards.Surely good enough for deer hunting at moderate ranges.Every malfunction the rifle has ever had was magazine related. If you get good mags,it will never fail you.I have had a few Mini-14s,and have sold them off,but will never get rid of the Mini-30.That said,it ain't no M1A.I describe it as an M1 carbine on speed.

Where did you get your "good mags", and what would you call bad mags?

Mini-14's and 30's are great. Most if not all problems are in fact magazine related. I've had luck with Pro-Mag, Ram-Line (mini 14) of course the factory 20 rounders. There are plenty of factory mags out there and yes, they are a little pricey at 25-35 bucks, but they will last you forever. Once you get good mags, you will find that the mini is an ideal plinker and sporting arm.

Most of the negative feed back you will get is because people are comparing them to ARs and AKs which in my opinion are battle rifles and not intended for ranch or sporting use. The Mini's are plenty accurate especially with the synthetic stocks. You can get even more accuracy with quality ammo. All in all, I would say you could expect 2-4" groups at 100 yards. This isnt bench rest competition accuracy, but this isnt a bench rest gun. Its a truck and ranch carbine.

The action is completely reliable. Enough said there.

The most important thing is to not be swayed by people telling you that ARs and AKs are better. Apples and Oranges. All three are excellent, but you will have to choose which is excellent for you.

I like my mini 30. Its does string the shots when the barrel heats up.Mine is 5 years old, so its not one with the heavy barrel. Its been a really good gun. I mostly just use the 5 round mag. I do have a scope on mine. It shoots fine for me. I mostly shoot my ar and my m44 but the mini 30 is still fun to shoot.

I have bought SO MANY crappy magazines for my Mini-14 and Mini-30, it's truely amazing. Every once in a while, I try out a new brand, and then just toss it in the trash. The only ones I've found that are any good are Promag 10-round steel or nickel (not the plastic ones). Of course, factory mags would be great, but here in CA we can't get em.

I have a NEW mini-14 with synthetic stock and Stainless barrel. I love it It's much more accurate than the older models. I also have an M1A and it's great!!! Last weekend I was killing the 18" targets @ 400 yards. My favorite semi auto rifle. I have been thinking of getting a Mini-30 to go along with the 14 and probably will just because they're on the AWB list. I missed out the lkast time and living in CA I can't get an AK or AR unless it's atop loading fixed mag type. I would splurge if I were you and get the M1A anyway it's worth the money. I'll be getting another just to have.

Either way you'll have fun. Get the mini-30 and let us know how you like it.

My son has killed 6 deer with his, no jams with factory magazines. We have 10 reliable 30 rnd mags, found by trial and error. We lost 4 in testing that we stomped flat and trashed.

It will shoot into 3" all day long at 100 yards with the scope set on 7 power, 1 1/2" if we let the barrel cool between shots.

No matter it stays on skeet clays at 100 yards no matter how fast it is shot. Remember it is not a target rifle what ever but it is damn fun at the range!!!
