Ruger MKII 512GCL Help
I just purchased by MKII from my FFL dealer. The Ruger is drilled and tapped for a mount.

Problem is someone at Ruger over tightened the first screw and its very hard to get out. The other two came out with no problem. Does anyone have any suggestions on how to get the screw out?

The screws are very soft and they bend easy..... I dont want to add any more pressure and strip out the screw. Its in far enough were I can see the treads.

Any suggestions. So far I've left a drop of oil on it hoping that it will penetrate enough to lossen the screw. Any help would be really appreciated!!

TIA

Couple tricks I've used with success in the past.

Freeze the part and hope that the screw has a greater rate of contraction than the material surrounding it. I do this first because its the (potentially) least destructive.

Heat the part. Like cooling, you're hoping the surrounding material has a greater rate of expansion than the screw. Another benefit is heat will break chemical bonds (LokTite).

Beat on it. Soak the part in penetrating oil and let it sit for "a while". Using a screwdriver with a well fitting tip, tap on the screwdriver while trying to turn the screw out (Craftsman's lifetime warranty comes in handy at times ;) ). The beat and twist also works when heating (be careful you don't use the part as a branding iron!) and cooling.

If all else fails, the screw can be drilled out or a hole drilled and a screw extractor used.

But if the gun is new, I would take it back to the dealer. He probably has a gunsmith he uses or, at worst, it can be sent back to Ruger.

The latter may be best anyway. If you mess with it and hurt the gun in some way, the warranty will be void.

I bought the run through a private FFL dealer so I'm not sure how that would work but it wouldnt hurt to ask. The gun is brand spanking new!

What is a good penetrating oil to use. I have Militec 1, Armatec, FP10 and Hoppes oil laying around. I'd rather not freeze or impact screw the gun unless I really really have to.

If you can get your hands on some Kroil, try letting some set on it for 24 hrs. Works better than any other penetrating oil I've ever used.

For penetrating oil?

Kroil first, Liquid Wrench next if you can't find Kroil. Get a good hollow ground screwdriver bit that fits the screw slot exactly, then tap as you try to back it out. Know anybody that's got a Brownell's screwdriver bit set?

Good ideas already about freezing/heating, etc.
