Hey guys - I am considering the new model ruger ranch rifle (223) for plinking and shooting varmints in south texas. I plenty of big guns and .22's but nothing in 223.

My thoughts are something to carry in the truck that is quick and easy to handle.

Blue or SS?
Wood or synthetic?
Scope, irons sights or red dot?

Thanks for you input!

If its new "580 or 581+" series s/n, then its all the things you just mentioned. Personally I like the look of synthetic+SS. I don't remember if they come with GI aperture sights or not, if they don't i'd add em.

Bump - If I plan to shoot coyotes out to say +/- 200 yards would the stock sights be enough?

Thanks!

It can be done but at 200 yards the front sight post will block out a coyote, it will be real hard to get a good bead on him. I use a 4 power weaver scope for coyote shots over 100 yards.

the new model mini14's are fine rifles use the scope rings provided compliments of ruger and put a quality4x scope of choice coyotes will tremble at the mention of your name!

I have a 581 series synthetic/SS. I like it, but really an AR-15 does most things better. If you prefer the Mini though, it's a good gun.
