I like the Ruger No 1 riflebut find it hard to pony up the cash for one. Is there a more affordable rifle with the same lines? i don't want a handi rifle. thanks

Hope. Not that I'm aware off. If you don't want to pay the price of a new one, I'ld look for a used one. Used ones run about $650 here.

There are a few other options, most notably the Browning/Winchester 1885...but, it won't save you any money, as they tend to cost quite a bit more. I think Cole's recommendation is a sound one, just wait for a good deal on a used one. They made a lot of 'em (in dozens of chamberings), so if you're patient and not too picky one'll turn up at a decent price.

:)

The Baikal is a break action, not a falling block...which I believe is what the OP is after.

Thought of one...the since discontinued Ruger No. 3 used to be a little cheaper, but they are a good bit more scarce so I don't know if that still holds true.

:)

the N0.3 went out years ago, it was the carbine version, I owned on in .223 and one in .22 Hornet, both with really good scopes would not shoot worth a darn, wish I still had em though for collectors. there are a few single shot wannabes, but a Ruger No. 1 is a Ruger No. 1. what else can you say, I own a few and I couold have other rifles, but I own them for what they are.

I, too, like the No. 1 better (has a better stock design, was offered in more chamberings, and was finished nicer), but I figured that it was worth mention, as it fits the criteria fairly well (depending upon what they sell for these days).

:)

You get what you pay for. The #1 is among the most beautiful production rifles made IMO. They ain't exactly cheap, but in a world where an old H&R break action 38 S&W brings $250, the #1 isn't all that bad. I am not aware of anything cheaper that replicates the #1.

My first #1 cost me about $300 15 years ago. My most recent acquisition set me back about $900. Hey, still cheaper than skiing for a hobby.
