Few questions guys. I was looking at the p89th. I had a p89dc a few years ago great gun great shooter. Well i am perparing to buy a new handgun for home defense. I have a mossberg 500 but want something my moveable in my small place i am moving into. I come to feeling i need to go to the .45acp in place of the 9mm. I have always told my self i would stay with the 9mm. I tell people you get my pen. and more rounds per mag. Well I am going toward the .45 I have been reading that there getting as much penitration as the 9mms plus the added knockdown.
So my thoughts went to a glock 21. I have looked them over at gander mountain only issue is it seems to feel alittle rougher then the p89dc did seems more bulky which i am sure it is being a .45 over a 9mm. So i am also looking at the p90th. I like it is the p89 look in a .45 cal. But am unsure as to which gun to buy.

So would you pick the gloc21 or the ruger p90th.

I don't know what a "p89th" or p90th" are.

I do know that Ruger makes a P-89 in 9mm and a P-90 in .45 acp.

Other current Ruger choices include the P-95 in 9mm and the 9-345 in .45 acp. These work very much like the P-89, while the Ruger SR-9 (9mm) has no decocker or decocking only "safety." (it has a frame mounted thumb safety)

The Glock 21 is a handful for most, but their newer G-21-SF model is more comfortable for many folks.

Other .45 handguns to consider are the Springfield XD and the S&W M&P in .45 acp. These two are both available with an optional thumb safety, or buy it without.

Be sure and consider the ammo cost and see if you really "need" a .45 caliber handgun.

.

I own a P90th and it is my primary carry weapon as well as my HD weapon. I have also shot the glock 21 on countless occasions. I wont tell you which one to buy but I will instead pose several questions to you to help you make a choice.

1. How do you feel about composite guns?

2. Do you require a saftey or decocker?

3. Have you shot either of the 2?
If not I would recomend you rent them and try them out. Ergonomics are quite different between the 2.

4. Is weight an issue for you?

These may help you figure out which will be better for you.
Good luck to you and I hope you enjoy your soon to be new pistol.

Welcome to THR -- I would go Glock in your case. You have chosen 2 good quality handguns but have found that since Glocks are in A LOT of LEO hands, there are ALOT more accessories to be found for them.
Good luck on your quest

David E, the "th" suffix means it's a two-tone and has hogue grips. See here: P90th

I have a P90th myself and I love it. The hogue grips feel great.

I shot my first glock last weekend. I liked it, but the grip angle would take some getting used to. It naturally points high for me, but I'm guessing that's only b/c I'm not used to it. I don't think you'd really be disappointed in either one though. That being said, if it were me I'd pick the P90. I absolutely love mine. Built like a tank, extremely accurate, and really not all that bad to carry if you pick up a good holster and belt. One thing probably worth considering is the added capacity of the glock (13 vs 8). I've never held a G21, but I'm assuming the magazine are double-stack which may have added to the bulkiness you felt. The P90 is single stack. I'm also not completely comfortable with a glock's light trigger coupled with it's lack of a safety. I know there's plenty of people who'd disagree with me, and that's fine. Hopefully no one tries to argue with me about it... it's just personal opinion and I'm just not 100% comfortable with it. To each their own, right?

Hold both, see how both point for you, and go from there. If the Ruger feels better, don't pick the glock for the added capacity... it's more important for the gun to feel right than it is to have extra rounds (IMO).

I had a P90th - loved it, but traded it for a 1911. :( Even though I love the 1911, I am kicking myself for trading it.

thanks guys I am new here so i will not argue with any one just yet:)
I am still on the fence when i get ready to buy i think i will go try out the glock alittle more. I like the idea of a glock but am not sure about the grip

i think i've fired just about every .45 on the market and alot of it has to do with how each gun fits your hand and how much time you're willing to keep it running.

you've picked 2 of the most rugged guns available.

many find the Glock 21 a bit big in their hands...i actually find the Glock 30 a better fit and more accurate too.

i'm not a fan of the Ruger line, but the P90 is the exception. each one i've fire has been very accurate. to give you an idea of the strenght of the P90, consider that it was originally designed to be chambered for the 10mm...they changed the design with the advent of the .40...but went on the market only as a .45

Thanks for clearing up the "th" part of the gun model.

Bigtim, as I said earlier, be sure to check out the Glock 21-SF, which feels AND POINTS better than the standard 21.

Also, the XD and M&P are alternative choices. The M&P comes with 3 sizes of backstrap, so you can tweak it to fit YOU. They usually have the 'medium' on at the dealer, but see if you can put on a 'small.' I did and liked it better than the medium.

thanks guys I am going thursday to look at and properly buy the glock 21. I am hoping he has it in slim frame but i think i will be ok either way thanks for the help. I plan to buy the p89th in a few months anyway.

p90 >glock 21
I have the new gen P345 and I love mine. its so nice I want a p90 just to have a set of the ruger 45's.

I think both are good guns and you could not have gone wrong with either choice. I have owned both in the past and kept the Glock. Both are big guns, might as well have the one that holds 13 vs only 8. The 345 is much thinner and easier to carry. That would be a temptation for me.

By the way the SF stands for short frame, not slim frame. Both are the same thickness. The SF is shorter from front to back making it easier to grip.
