Have any of you seen the Ruger Redhawk Alaskan 454/45 Long colt WooHoo ,I think Ruger has been listening .DREAM GUN :p

Yes, but I'm thinking it might be cheaper to have your own smith chop the barrel and move the front sight on a Super Redhawk. Just a Thought.

I gotta wonder...that's a pretty short tube. How much velocity are you giving up just to get a snubnose profile? On a honkin big gun, at that.

I'm not an expert, and I don't play one on TV, but I would feel better with a 4-5" barrel. Which, I know, defeats the whole purpose....just sayin'.

I read a writeup comparing performance out of the Alaskan and the full size SRH. There was a substantial drop in performance out of the shorter barrel, but it still packed one heck of a wallop. I would think the model would be ideal for hot .45 Colt loads.

"Overall, the average velocity generated by the .454 Casull loads in the 7 1/2-inch barrel was 1742 fps with 1823 ft-lbs energy. In the 2 1/2-inch barrel the average velocity was 1497 fps with 1346 ft-lbs energy. That amounts to a 14.1 percent reduction in average velocity and a 26.2 percent reduction in average energy caused by the 66.6 percent reduction in barrel length."

For some reason this gun really tickles my "too much is not enough" side. There's nothing in the Washington state woods that warrants this hand-cannon, but I want one! Yeah, supposedly there are Grizzlies in the North Cascades, but other than their use as a selling point to the wife, I've got more chances of running into a winning lottery ticket.

In this "Through the Looking Glass World", the .454 is the small and fast round. I'm with only1asterisk, this is the only gun that justifies the .480 Ruger for me. Why carry this brick for .45 Colt? Taurus makes a snubby for the round, and for "nucular" loads you've got the 1st gen Vaqueros with bird's head grip, or, as HiWayMan said, chop a Redhawk.

Does anybody want to fire a .454 in a snubby? 'Nuff said.

The .480 is the lower pressure, big bore alternative. It's the ".44 special" to Linebaugh's .475 ".44 magnum". I think I saw some 275 grain Gold Dots for it. This would lay low anything that I'm ever likely to encounter in the woods, with a little extra "WooHoo!" thrown in.

Somebody around here recently referred to the .480 Ruger as the ".48 Special," which merited a grin.

I think the just brought it out to respond to the shorter barrle s&w .500. They didn't want Smith to be the one one on the block wiht a realy big bore, really packable gun. It also is a good alternative to a Mountain Gun,
Ive been long saying that ruger needed to macke a redhawl with a shorter barrel

i'd suggest if you want one just to wait a bit. All the "experts" and what not will immeadiatyely run to get one egged on by their ego only to discover the shooting sensation is a bit much to really make it worth their while. They'll sell it off for something they'll use more. Of course many of these found used will only have 1 or 2 full cylinders fired through them. :p

Imitation is the sincerest form of flattery. As I see it, Ruger saw the custom shops cutting SRHs down for carry and decided to get on the bandwagon.

Why they still won't make >10 round mags is beyond me...

Ruger is now selling civilian normal-cap 15-round mags for their 9mm pistols and carbine, but not for the .40 S&W or .45 ACP models. Which makes sense -- such unimaginably powerful handgun calibers as the .40 S&W practically qualify as WMDs anyway.

The 9mm guns don't come with normal-cap mags, mind you. You have to pay $35.55 for such an exotic accessory.

(At least it's the same price as an extra 10-round mag.)

I like the Ruger revolvers I've tried, own one, and plan to buy more. I'm too wimpy for the SRH Alaskan, but it is a mighty kewl idea. However, I would not buy Ruger's new, obsessively over-safetied P345 pistol on a bet, even though I like its looks and size. You have to draw the line somewhere.

. . . like that "loaded chamber!" flag on the P345 that pops up smack in the middle of the top of the slide like a [censored] old-timey cash register.

Sorry, drifting off topic.

I've heard that about the .500 too and I've NEVER seen a used one around here.

The new P95s and P89s coming into my local store are coming with two 15 round mags in the box.

Good to hear. I was going from Ruger's own website. It says the P89 has a "capacity" of 10 and comes with two 10-round magazines.

If I'm wrong, I gladly retract the dig. Now how 'bout some big bore hi-cap pistols?

Proportions are all wrong. I much prefer the custom Redhawk that WildAlaska was pushing a while ago [not that I can afford either one.....].

Hey now, before you bring up aesthetics, "unusual" proportions, and WA in the same post, keep this in mind... :D

(I like 'em all)

Holy WOW!!! And I thought the 4" .500 was excessive! :what:(Oh wait, it is... :D )

Me? I'd be pretty happy with a 3" .44 Magnum S&W, methinks. Much more manageable proportions in my mind, and just far enough from the .500 and .454s on the Richter Scale I'd even dare touch one off! ;)
