Thread title says it all. I was looking at buying a single action revolver. I was also thinking of buying a .22 pistol. Budget says I can have one or the other in about, oh, July. So I've decided on a .22 single-action revolver.

The Single-Six is the highest contender right now. We had an Old Model S-S around the house a few years ago that I remember shooting quite a bit. My memory isn't great, but I don't recall it being super-accurate (or maybe my skill wasn't so good). Other than that I thought it was a fun little gun. I think it was the 6.5" barrel model too.

What I'm planning on using this for is as a woods/fun/plinker. I mean, what else DO you do with a .22? ;)

My questions:
How is the accuracy of the convertibles with the .22LR? With the .22 Magnum?

If somebody has the fixed sight model (I'm looking at the 5.5" model, FWIW), is the POA/POI close between the two cylinders? At 15 yards? 20? 25?

How are the trigger pulls on the new models? I remember the old model had a pretty good trigger, but lacked the transfer bar. To this day I still try to load every SA revolver from the half-cock, whether or not it has one!

What are the street prices in your areas? I know it will likely vary, but I would like to be in the ballpark. If I read everything correctly, Ruger lists the fixed-sight, 5.5" convertible for $399.

And any other comments and observations would be appreciated. Thanks all.

wanderinwalker, go over to the Ruger forum and you'll get mostly all good reports on single sixes including area prices. I don't own one yet but I want one.:p

At the moment, I have three single sixes, a 5.5 old model (my favorite), a 5.5 stainless new model, and a 6ish old model with the .22 mag cylinder. Possibly I'm biased, because there are a lot of old and new model blackhawks, super blackhawks, and a vaquero in the mix, and NRA smallbore pistol is kind of a tradition in my family, so I'm into the target pistols as well.
(deepo breath)
Taking everything into consideration, the best example of an old model single six is, in my subjective opinion, better than the best of the new models I've tried. Maybe mine is magic, maybe I'm a moron, disregard me if you like, but my old model 5.5 has laser like accuracy, and the new model I have does not. An old model, used, ought to be closer to $200 than to $300, with the convertible cylinder.

I have a Single Six. Had it for... 35 years or so, just after they came out with the transfer bar.

Somehow, I never really warmed up to it... :(

Accuracy is 'ok', trigger is kinda awful. Wish I liked it more... sigh.

single six...

i bought a used Single six, 5.5" BBL blued, with only the .22 LR cylinder, and adjustable sights about 4 years ago and i really love it!

the trigger is nice and light, its really accurate with CCI mini-mag HP's and solids.

If you are going to get one, i recommend you get one with adjustable sights, it will help you fit it to whatever ammo you choose and wont be a guessing game as to where to aim. i had a fixed sight Single Six and a Mk I and i sold them cause it was too frustrating to remember where to aim to hit the target.

I think it would be very frustrating to try to shoot both 22 LR and 22 mag out of the same gun because you would have to keep adjusting the sights between them if you switch ammo. Plus i think mag ammo isnt worth it out of a handgun. a 22 mag has about the same velocity and power out of a handgun as a .22 LR has out of a rifle. if you want to shoot hard and fast ammo, just use Velocitors out of your Single Six.

new prices around me for a 5.5"- 6.5" BBL blued Single six are about $285-$345 depending on the store. used guns go for between $190-$250. they will be less $$$ if you find one with just the Long Rifle Cylinder.

i plan to use mine for handgun hunting this summer and fall as i have recently gotten into it with several of my handguns. good luck, let us know how it works out. -Eric
