I recently bought a new Ruger SP101 357 mag

This is really hard to explain and I can't get my camera to focus well enough for it to be visible. There appears to be like a small cut underneath one part of the rifling, but its only on the 8 o'clock position of the crown, almost as if it was being crowned on a lathe, and it went too deep in that spot. The crown is intact and undamaged, but where the one line of rifling meets the crown, theres a small cut/gap under that one, just about deep enough to catch your fingernail.

I shot the revolver and didn't notice any major problems. Wasn't particularly accurate but I think that has more to do with me than the gun.

I'm not sure if this is worth a call/trip to Ruger about.

I got a ruger like that once, had no affect on the accuracy but I went a head and just re-crowned it at 45 degrees and called it a day, still cheaper than sending it back to ruger.

Call Ruger. If the gun is damaged Ruger will send a prepaid shipping label. You want the crown to be proper. There is a tool for taking nicks and dings out of the crown of the barrel called a muzzle crowning lap. Ruger is supposed to use the muzzle crowning lap not the end consumer. Honestly, I would not have accepted the gun like that. But you shouldn't need a gunsmith to accompany you to pick up a gun.

Ruger will send a prepaid shipping label

I stand corrected, someone once told me they didn't pay shipping to them but they would send it back to you on their dime. I never bothered to verify as I already had the proper tools to re do the muzzle crown.

They ask when you bought it before agreeing to send the prepaid label. My guess is that if it's been awhile they will make you send it on your dime. No idea how long that is.

Sending a supported model back to Ruger doesn't cost anything.
