Ruger SR-762 vs Sig 716

So trying to figure out an unproductive way to blow the tax return and looking at .308 "battle" rifles to add to my collection.

I hear/read good things both about the Ruger SR-762, and the Sig 716 and I'm trying to decide if the extra $300 (give or take) the Sig is going for is genuinely worth it or if it's apples and oranges.

Anyone want to chime in on the idea? Obviously wouldn't mind saving a few bucks unless the Ruger is actually inferior. I've read the Sig generally requires a break-in period to reliably feed, while the Ruger seems to do fine out of the box.

Then there's also the idea I'd probably change the butt stock on the Ruger which would add a little to the price off the bat, any other accessory would likely apply to either anyway.

Thoughts? Maybe shared experiences with either?

Boy! That's a hard problem to face. I have looked over the ruger personally but not the sig. It seemed like a very nice rifle to me. I have experience with a couple AR10 style rifles. The ruger seemed light compact and balanced.

The 901 is pretty darn cool I can agree there, but from what I'm finding almost twice the price, and it's a gas system while these two are rods, which I'm kind of a fan of personally.

Between those I like the Ruger -- it is lighter weight. I like the DPMS GII AP4 even better. And even better still, the S&W M&P10 (I prefer 18" barrels to 16"). I just picked up an M&P10 this week in fact.

I can't comment on the 716, but my sig m400 in 5.56 is a fantastic rifle. The quality really impresses me, and I would not hesitate to buy one in 7.62.

Save some $? CDNN just had an incredible sale on ArmaLite's AR-10TC included bipod, sling, and some other doo dads for $1300! They may have 1 left...?

The 901 is cool if the main reason you want it is to swap out uppers, The reason I didn't go with Colt was you can only get 16" barrel and a 1/12 twist good for up to 165 - 175 grn supposedly but the 1/10 is good at 180 hunting bullets if you want that. Also their warranty is not the best from what others have reported. The 716 FDE and patrol is 16" with a 1/10 twist And all though they have reported problems Sig has fixed them no problem. I went with the Sig in a 18" barrel and 1/10 twist the 3 gun or the DMR. Ruger also has a great warranty as far as I know, I mainly have pistols and 10/22 from Ruger

My ruger has been great. I put a magpul str stock on it which brought the price to 1800 before tax. I like that it has a little bit longer hand guards and that they're modular. You can add plastics handguards or picitanny rails where ever you want on it. You can't go wrong with either I just preferred the ruger over the sig. Plus the ruger comes with 3 mags.

@G. Barnes How many rounds have you put through yours? Noticed anything so far that might be worth adding to point out? I keep leaning towards the Ruger as well, but of course just trying to cover the bases.

The armalite I'll personally steer away from just from past experiences with their products. I've also heard tails of severe FTE issues in that model requiring a send back to the mfg for part change outs after a mediocre round count has been through them.

Not really looking for a gas system for that caliber and opting for piston instead, again just out of personal preference and not looking to debate semantics.

However like I said, the Ruger is looking like it may be the one for me. I love my other Rugers and their customer support has always been good to me. Eh, the decision process we go through on our toys is about tantamount to a woman with her shoes...but that's the breaks lol

I got my SIG 716 because around here it was less expensive than the Ruger. Its been great, 100% out of the box with both P-Mag(included) and my DPMS mags (of which I've a bunch). I just wanted a piston 7.62x51AR, I've also been very happy with my DPMS.

I've only owned it for a couple months so its only seen about 250 rds. The only downside is the trigger but the sig has a regular mil spec trigger. If you don't mind a regular gas system cmmg has a very nice ar 10. It comes with a stainless barrel, geiselle two stage trigger,free float rail, upgraded stock, and upgraded muzzle break. It runs the same price as the ruger and sig.

I just bought a Windham 308, AR-10. I was just about to write my own post, because I am thinking about adding another 308 to the herd, when I ran across this one. I didn't realize that the Ruger was piston operated or I may have gone that route instead. So far, I am very pleased with the Windham. I am getting 3" horizontally strung groups at 100 with open sights. That is for 10- 12 rounds each with most going under the 2'' mark. I think this will probably be a 1 MOA shooter when I add a scope to it. I am just having a lot of fun with the open sights right now, at 52 I am surprised that I can shoot that well with the irons and am going to enjoy it for a while longer. Also, while I already have a good Leupuld for it, I haven't figured out what I want to use for a mounting system yet. Some suggestion wouldn't hurt.
So getting back to the OP's original question about Piston operated guns, I too would like to hear about your opinions on the Sig and the Ruger. Other guns I am considering are the PTR 91 and, possibly, the FN SCAR in 308.

@CZ223, for me I was looking for something a bit less proprietary than the SCAR as it's not in the least bit forgiving on things like magazines, since if it's not FN then you're SOL. The price of those also throws a wrench on its chances of ending up in my safe anytime soon.

The PTR91 might be a good option but the stories I've heard in quality control and random temperament issues of the various FAL types out there kind of persuaded me past that route, though I'm sure I'll end up with one or an HK91 or something at some point once I get more time to really research the best options in its class.

I came to the two finalists of the Ruger and Sig based on their quality, acceptance of random mags including pmag's, weight, etc. I figure I'll give another week or two to find more info and seek more opinions before I pull the trigger but currently the Ruger is still in the lead for me.
