So I plan to get a Ruger SR40 in stainless steel. I was wondering if anybody has had a bad experience with them. I love Ruger's and just bought a mini 14 a month ago and so I am expecting great things. Also any good holsters for carrying on the belt. I will not be using for concealed carry. Thanks.

Wife likes hers, and so do I. Of the six 40s we have it's the most comfortable to shoot by a good margin. It's been flawless through a tad over 600 rounds: cast, plated and jacketed.

I have had great luck with the SR series of poly pistols. I would not hesitate to purchase if you want the pistol... issues are few and far between, no different than the other top brand pistols around. Ruger is my favorite brand, because I do not personally know of one person who did not love their Ruger (granted, the sample size is smaller than Glock and 1911 owners).

Not only that, they are great value for money. If the pistol fits you, then I say "pull the trigger" on the purchase. Remember, Ruger guarantees their firearms with +P and +P+ ammo as long as it is factory made.

As far as hip holsters, I would go with a boring snap nylon holster from Gunmate, Blackhawk, Uncle Mike, etc. Cheap, durable, simple, and doesn't wear the finish like plastic/kydex holsters.

I've got the SR40c and love it, I shoot IDPA with it. I had a hard time finding a holster for it, seems like the Kydex holsters are all made for the SR9. The 40 will fit them, but it's a tighter fit, takes some tweaking to get the holster so it will release easily.

If you get really desperate -- try heating the holster with a good heat gun (you can get one at Harbor Freight pretty cheaply) with the gun in the holster.

Then as the plastic softens just a bit, wiggle the gun. I've done this with some holsters to get them to loosen up a little.

Overdo it and you'll need a new holster. Do it carefully.
