Quick question:
I have a used good condition Ruger SR40 with 5 mags and a Blackhawk Serpa holster that I am considering trading in for another gun. I've put 400-500 rounds through it over the last 3 years. I have never traded or sold a gun before so I was hoping for a ballpark estimate of what I should expect to be offered for the whole package at a gun shop?

--Thanks for your time

Probably 50% of what the gun sells for new at best. Same for the magazines, the holster, probably not much.

Remember, the dealer can buy a brand new gun for 80-90% of what he is selling them for. He will probably sell your old gun for about 75% of the cost of a new gun. If he puts more than 50% into it he won't make much if anything for his trouble. He isn't taking advantage of you, he is in business to make a profit and has to pay the power bills too.

I might make the trade, but try to sell the mags and holster separately. If you can find a buyer for your gun and sell it, you'll do a little better, but still no more than the 75% the dealer would be asking for it. The difference between what you'd get on trade and selling yourself will probably only be $25-$30. It might not be worth the hassle for such a small amount.

Thanks jmr40 for that well thought out reply! That is great info and I definitely learned something new

The gun is $349 on slickguns.com "new", figure if you put it on guntrader or armslist, just look at what the other ones are going for. That's the best way of getting the going rate.
Gun stores "in my dealings" give you the worse price on used guns. Either Gun trader or Armslist , Guns America etc, should give you a good idea of what they go for.Probablly a store will give you half like the other guy mentioned. Sell It privately.

I recently sold an SR9 to an LGS to help fund another gun. Firearm in excellent condition, original box and papers, two extra mags.... $300. Good enough for me. I asked about the mag value, he would have given me 275 without the extras. I still have a CrossBreed holster to sell. It should bring 20 bucks. Maybe more if I ask.

I probably coulda got more through a private sale. Had it listed for a week, then took the easy way out.

SR9/40's sell new for 400-450 around here.

Rule of Thumb:

Expect 60% of full retail from a dealer----mags count for nothing other than the 2 it came with

75% to 80% from a private sale----extra mags over the 2 it came with would be negotiable

Not much, definitely avoid selling it back to a dealer who will subtract a cool 60-70% of what he charged you for it, best bet is to list it in your local newspaper(if they allow such)and you will be far happier then trying to sell it off over the internet.

Ruger's a decent gun, but they carry very little in the way of resale value like a Glock, Sig, HK, or S&W generally do.

Thanks everybody for your help! I do like the Ruger but if I decide to sell or trade, I think it will be privately instead of at a shop

Walking around with it at one of the larger gun shows is a good way. Know what they are going for new at that show and figure you can probably get 70-80% of that -- what the dealer that would offer you 50-60% of new would put it out for.

Also doesn't hurt to ask a few dealers what they'd give you for it to set a floor price when walking around.

I honestly think the SR series has been dropping a bit in price lately. I don't know if its the case (just a guess on my part), but Ruger may be dropping the price a bit lower now that the P-95 is completely out of production. Having a gun in that low to mid $300 price range gets a lot of sales, and most of the early adopters willing to pay a higher price for an SR already have one.

Just for a point of reference - I just picked up an SR9 used myself with 2 mags and case for $285.
