I'm in the market for my first auto-loader. I finally decided on what I want--a Ruger SR9c. I wanted a compact American made pistol, and everyone is saying how the trigger on the new SR9c is great. I was ready to make my purchase today until I found there were two versions--stainless and a painted alloy.

Ruger's website must be off because they both weight in at 23.40oz. I'm assuming the blackened "alloy" is aluminum, although pretty much every manufactuered metal is technically an "alloy".

Does anyone know if the slide on the SR9C alloy is aluminum or plain jane steel? Further more, which version do you think would hold up better?

According to my dealer they're both the same price.

I'm sure the black slide is steel not aluminum. Aluminum would not be a good material for a slide. Having said that I would get the one with the stainless slide since it will look better down the road.

I'm not sure I would say the SR9C has a great trigger or even a good trigger but it is an improvement over the extremely bad SR9 full size trigger.

The blackened alloy is listed under the specs as "Alloy Steel". I have the full size SR9 stainless version and love it. However, I want an SR9c and when I get one, I'm going with the blackened version. Not sure why, I just think it looks better on the smaller frame than the stainless does

I have the SR9C in all black looks great I think. I just dont like twotone guns

Which one?

I have the Stainless Slide model. If it was my EDC I would have chosen black. I use a DOn Hume 715 MW holster for a Glock 23, fits perfect.
BTW, It's a marvelous gun and I love the trigger, I've run evry brand of ammo thru it and have never had a single FTE or FTF.
:D

SR9...

I don't own an SR9, but did a little research on these about a year ago.

The SR9 slide and the barrel are both stainless steel.

The S9 black finish is a vapor deposition finish, somewhat similiar to nitron and trinyte. The Ruger finish has a hardness of 68, which is pretty tough. The Ruger finish is not a metal treatment like tenifer or melonite, which color the metal white. On these other finishes, the melonite and tenifer treatments are extremely tough, but the black finish on top of the melonite and tenifer is a lot *less* durable. The nice thing about this new Ruger finish is that the black finish is extremely hard. I don't know how it holds up, but it sounds pretty tough.

The SR9 finish is probably a lot better than most of the finishes used on stock guns...

I had a SR9 ,it was sent back to Ruger for repairs, you may want to go over to ruger.com and read about Ruger issues with their newer guns! I do own 2 other Rugers which are GREAT guns, but their 9 and 30 yrs old. a Mark II competition target SS 6 7/8 Slab side. a 10-22 rifle. I traded the Ruger in on MP9 compact, its better made. I'm being honest with you -others will disagree. GO READ!

They had a few voluntary recalls. Nothing too big on new designs, and the reality is that the type of thing they were recalled for was the type of thing that many less reputable companies would have simply overlooked. Be glad that Ruger is willing to take the time to make the guns right.

If you're buying the gun new, then it's almost certainly post recall and you have nothing to worry about.

That said, between the traditional stainless and blackened stainless (they're both steel), I'd just get whatever was cheaper and available. Neither will rust (at least not easily), and I don't really have an aesthetic preference.

I have been looking also at the SR9c and since the 1st time I saw it Black was the color. But when I started researching this gun, I noticed that the SR9 comes in OD Green! I think that would be a great color for the SR9c, but I still love the black. Does anyone know what the going price is for the Sr9c? I see the suggested reatail is around $525.00, is this what I sould expect or is it under or above the SRP?

I haven't shot the SR9c but I did look at one when they first came out. The shop I was in had them for around $450. I kinda suspect you might find one at a better deal than that if you dig around though.
The black on the SR9c is not stainless. It has what they call a Nitrodox IIRC finish. It would probably be fine. The stainless ones tend to have sharp slide serrations. I have seen several posts about guys filing or stoning them to smooth them. If you choose to do this be careful to stay off the flats so you don't mar the finish.
