I recently borrowed a blackpowder rifle from a friend. However, it's been neglected for quite some time and has a lot of rust inside the barrel.

Will this be potentially harmful if I shoot the gun with the rust?

How would one go about removing this kind of rust?

Thanks!

Brass bore brush & solvent. Scrub, scrub, scrub. Use a muzzle guard so you don't ruin the muzzle. Then wipe down with patches as you would when you normally clean. Flash a bore light down (you may want to drop something down that will come out easily and is reflective) and make your determination from there. Most rust doesn't go very far down. We're talking a number of years of neglect and not a century of being exposed to nature.

Okay, sounds good. It just hasn't been used in three years, and I figure it ought to clean up nicely. I would be cleaning it now, but Walmart had closed early tonight for the holiday.

My God man,you don't have adequate firearm cleaning materials at the ready.I'm shocked man, shocked. How did that happen.
For shame. :scrutiny:

The rust should come out easily. I was reading an interview with Ron Dahlitz (the developer of Buffalo Bullets) and he suggested using steel wool to smooth manufacturing tooling marks. If the rust is bad some steel wool might be a good thing to try.

Might also try RemClean, Flitz, or JB Bore paste. As above, I'd protect the muzzle and take it easy. There are solvents that dissolve rust (Kroil)

But is it OK to shoot BP gun if there is rust in the barrel? You see, I was little hasty at gunshop yesterday (bought Uberti Remington 1858) and when I came home I found a slight layer of rust near the barrel crown.

I always dis-assemble and clean any new gun that comes in the door...BEFORE ...I shoot it. Just to check things out. That would extend to removing rust, wherever it is. That '5* is as easy to dis-assemble as a SAA colt.
