Rusty Garand Chamber

Need some help on how to take care of my M1 Garand's chamber that has rust in it now.

Saw a program the other day interviewing a WW2 Medal of Honor recipient for his actions at Normandy. Other than his impressive story I noticed something he said about the Garand having a problem with getting rust in the chamber.

That had me thinking I should check my M1 that I haven't had out for a while. There was rust.

Never gave much thought to it before, just wiped inside it with a oily patch.

So what is the most affective way to remedy this problem?

Don't know of a cause for chamber rusting by itself, but the bore & chamber were subject to damage from the corrosive ammo (primers) that were used at the time, if the rifles weren't cleaned constantly.

If you shoot more modern (Greek) milsurp ammo or handloaded equivalent, I believe the corrosive primer / immediate cleaning concern goes away.

You might treat it as any other rifle and leave a light film of oil in the bore/chamber for storage. I don't think anything else is required.

I never have had any rust issues in any of my Garands.
If you are getting rust its from high humidity or improper cleaning/care
Hopefully you have light rust and not pitting. Soak chamber with Hoppes, let set and clean with a chamber brush, wipe chamber clean with a patch. Continue until rust is gone.
If you lightly coat chamber with oil afterwards it is a good idea to wipe it dry before firing

I just answered the same question about a Savage 99 in Gunsmithing.
The same technique will work just as well in the Garand chamber.

I've done it more then once on them and always get them working just fine again.

The best and only explanation for a rusty chamber in an M1 is, somebody shot corrosive ammo in it and didn't clean it properly afterward.
