RWS cap test

I had much better luck with the RWS used on my stock Pietta 1860 nipples. I did push them on firmly with a deer antler.

Maybe the cones can be rubbed with some emery cloth or super fine sandpaper to reduce the taper a little bit.

Pietta factory nipples are fairly inexpensive, and new ones may work better with RWS caps than the ones on the revolver.
Old South sells them for $6.69 for a 3 pack. --->>> https://www.oldsouthfirearms.com/nipplesrevolver.aspx

Also, it seemed like you could have used a nipple pick when the cap went off but there was a misfire.
It did produce a super bright flash at 6:37 in the video.

Thanks for sharing.

In the past when I found that a nipple seemed too big for the cap, I would chuck the nipple in my drill press and use some 600 grit emery paper on the spinning nipple to smooth it and to take a little off the taper so the caps fit better.

Good timing on this post. I think many folks have just bought RWS caps (perhaps for the first time) since they have been available in bulk for a good price recently.

I dont know much about the 1075's I just recieved but look forward to trying them. Hoping they're better than the CCI's I have been using.

Yes probably should have used a nipple pick and yes I noticed the flash as well at 5.35 I got hit in the hand unusually hard by what I assumed was a cap fragment .Something funny is going on with these caps for me. If all I could get was these caps I would work on the nipples to improve performance but I hope one day to get back to my old reliable Remington 10s

I am a die hard remington cap user. If not using remington then im using homemade caps. Remingtons just work better and never have to worry about fitment issues on any of my nipples. I use remington 10s and 11s with slixshot and uncle mikes nipples...no fitment issues what so ever.

I'm with you guys. I have maybe 500 Remington #10s and I'll hold them for cowboy action shooting matchs. But ... as we all know, we have to take what we get in this shortage. I have 1k CCI #11s that I "squose" a bit and they work fine. Now I have these 2.5k of RWS that are working on my Pietta 1860s. From shooting them, I see a lot more flash and of the opinion the bust open a more violently.

I posted a YouTube video where I tested RWS caps, paper cartridges and Golf Wax lube. But I had video from a camera setting to my right side that I didn't use. I was able to capture the flash of the caps in some of the shots. I'd say they flashed every shot but the camera was set at 30 frames per second so only caught these few.

What's that line in the old rock song, "If you can't be with the one you love, love the one you're with."

Pardon my naiveté, how does one make homemade caps?

I picked up a 2,500 count carton of RWS 1075+ caps from Midway while they had them. They worked perfectly on my Euroarms 1858 Remington. Last night I shot them on a new Pietta Dance revolver and several of them perforated instead of fragmenting. I also tried a cylinder's worth of CCI No.11s and Remington No.10s, and they fragmented normally.

I've never seen anything like this before. In one case there was a tab of copper sticking out which made recocking the revolver difficult, until I cleared it.

Weird.

Dave, I will bet that a set of Slix nipples will solve that problem. In that you have 2500 of those caps, it would be worth the investment.

Have you considered filling in the hammer notch with JB Weld, or making it slightly flatter?

I removed the sharp edges on the hammer nose but I want to retain the ability to use the safety pins on the back of the cylinder. I ordered a set of Treso AMPCO nipples, so we'll see if that improves things.
