I have a chance to buy it. It's got an 8 3/8" barrel and is 98% easily. No box or paperwork though. A widow woman has it and I'm just trying to figure out a fair price for both of us. Help is appreciated.

I paid 7 something for mine with the same barrel length a few years back - no regrets. Fabulous shooter. Mine was also sans box but I didn't care about that.I wanted a splendid .22 revolver and that's what I got.

Anything under $800 - get it.

I paid $600 for mine with a 6" barrel about 5 years ago, so I also agree that $750 is fair.......

I am going to pour just a bit of cold water on the thought of buying a Model 17 with an 8 3/8" barrel.

Don't get me wrong, I love Model 17s and their predecessors the K-22s.

But a Model 17 with an 8 3/8" barrel is very muzzle heavy. I bought this Model 17 no-dash a year or two ago. It left the factory in 1963 and is still in pristine condition. Notice this one has what used to be called 'oversized target grips', rather than the more common Magna grips that often come on a Model 17. The grips are numbered to this gun, so it left the factory wearing them.

Exceedingly accurate, probably because of the heavy, non-tapered barrel and the longer sight radius. Definitely not because of any skill on the part of the shooter. This target was shot from a rest, quite close up, probably about 10 or 15 yards, don't really remember.

My point is, while it is admirable to want to help out a widow, bear in mind that a Model 17 with an 8 3/8" barrel tends to be quite muzzle heavy. It will be a bit heavier than the same model with a 6" barrel. Fine for the range, but not necessarily a gun you might want to be carrying in the woods. You are going to need an extra long holster for it.

Yes, with the 8 3/8" barrel a model 17 can command a premium price. I paid $950 for it.

Anyone contemplating carrying a clean vintage 17 in a holster, IN THE WOODS, these days SHOULD have cold water thrown on them- but carefully, so they dont get the gun wet! :D:p

Ive never shot an 8" M17, but my 8" DW .22 is a bit nose heavy. However, since you only have to keep it steady long enough to get off six shots before taking a break to reload, its hardly a problem.

I will say my 6" M17 is very nicely balanced. I still wouldnt mind snatching up a long one, too though, if the opportunity presented itself.

I have a beautiful 14-3 with the long barrel. It is muzzle heavy but a great shooter. Still, I would trade it straight up for a 6" Model 14 in similar (excellent) condition. I have a 6" 17-3 and like the balance better on the 6".

My Dad had a K22 with the 8 3/8” barrel. I lived the revolver and I do recall it being a bit barrel heavy but I didn’t mind. After he passed my Mim called and asked if I wanted one of his guns. She was giving one to each kid and a couple of his friends. I told her “I want that .22 revolver of his. The one I used to shoot all the time.” I completely forgot he had a crappy .22 Magnum High Standard Sentinel Mk IV. That’s the one she sent me. :( My sister has it now. The K22 went to a friend of my Dad’s. I would love to get it but I have no idea whatever happened to the guy.

My 17-3 is a 6”. I like it a lot. I would still love an 8 3/8” just for nostalgia.
