I'm a sucker for S&W revolvers. As result I bought a 25-5 nickel 6" pinned, the other day. DOB '81. The gun looks unfired, no box or stuff, $400. The downside: It must have sat a long time on the left side and there is some rust freckling on that side. Not as bad as rust on a '57 fairlane Ford but enough is it renders condition as %90 (a shooter for sure). I looked at this gun a while and finally gave in. I haven't seen a 25-5 for a long time.

Man, that's a great revolver. I don't have a .45ACP revolver in that barrel length; I bet yours shoots like a dream!

May I ask if the rifling is the shallow or deep cut?

I think the 25-5 is in .45 Colt, not ACP, isn't it?

I think that some of the early guns suffered inaccuracy due to excessively oversized chambers, or something like that. Hopefully yours will shoot OK for you.

I have lightly polished rust freckling with heavily oiled very fine steel wool with good success. I wouldn't do this unless I figured I had nothing to lose if I harmed the finish in the effort.

25-5 is .45 Colt. Gun came with TG TH TG. I have done some small rust removal with Blue Wonder and a work rag on the gun. I'm out of 0000 steel wool right now. Do you think that stuff is O.K. on Nickel. I was aware of chamber issue, one can only hope. Thanks for replies.

I've got a 25-5 w/ a 8-3/8" barrel. It has the most out-of-the-box accuracy of any gun I've ever bought. I got it about 25 years ago and it still looks like new. The grips are a bit big for my hands but it is still my fav handgun.

Make sure you don't let Hoppe's No. 9 or any solvent that removes copper fouling anywhere near your revolver. The solvents will get in where the rust poked through, and will attack the copper beneath the nickel, causing the plating to peel off. Use CLP and you'll be fine.

Thanks to all for replies: I haven't used Hoppes since I learned of issues with nickel years ago. But thanks for reiteration. As I'm getting older I NEED ALL the reminders I can get. I use CLP for cleaning and lube. No amonia based products.

Oversized Chambers

I have one of the earlier 25-5's, 4 inch barrel, blued, that has the dreaded "Oversize Chamber" and its a tack driver. Will outshoot any of my
38's, or 1911's. Even my Nork!

Kartracer..bring your Nork with kart barrel over and lets see how it does against the Smith.
