Bought this gun yesterday. Partly because it was cheap, but mainly because it has the original officers badge number engraved on it. I'll have to ask some more questions because the guy I bought it from says that he knows the officer it was issued to. The serial number is N47xx, so I think it was made in the 1960s.

Anyway, anyone know what grips this would have originally come with? The Pachmayrs on it look like they are old enough to be from the 60s, but I would think it came from the factory with wood grips. Just not sure which ones.

hawk,

If that is a four digit SN, it shipped in 1969 or 1970. It would have come with magna grips, but could have been ordered with target grips.

if ya need a 6 inch barrel for it,i got one. the 28 was the cheaper version of the highly polished model 27.great gun, carried it as a duty weapon at 1 time.but since we were only allowed 38's,went to a model 65 and a 9mm.28 is a great hunting weapon also.

Yeah, it's a four digit serial number. I figured it would be the magna grips. Guess I'll have to find an old beat up pair to match the gun. :)

Nothing at all wrong with that 28-2 (eitehr of them actually). It's just got character. :D

The Magna's would have been the standard, but the S&W target grips were on a lot of them.

Howdy

I have two Model 28-2s, one with a four inch barrel and one with a six inch barrel. As has been stated, the Magna grips were what usually came on them. Here is a photo of my six inch 28-2 wearing its Magna grips.

Check on the S&W Forums. The Diamond Magnas went away in '68. The later ones (without the diamonds) are a bit less pricey & rare. If you're looking for a pair with some patina you should have no problem.

Got any plans for the rubbers that are on it?

I have several 6 inch 28s now, I foolishly sold a 4 incher.

n47xx would be likely 1st year of that serial range or 1970

your looks like a good solid shooter. would make a great truck gun

Here is mine:

It's pretty darn heavy though, I guess that is why HP stopped carrying them. I love shooting it because recoil is so easy to manage. It is what I carry if I go hiking.

I believe the N prefix started in 1970 and that's likely when your gun was made.
